I am trying to remove the non-retractable radio antenna on my brother's Vanagon and, after watching all the videos out there on how to do it, I thought it would be easy.
I bought the Hirschmann radio antenna like everyone on TheSamba recommended and today I started to work on it. Got the grille off and the headlight housing removed. I took off the nut on the antenna and slid off the nut and plastic housing. And then I found this.
There is some kind of funky collar on the antenna. Any ideas on how to remove this antenna? I know it won't come out the hole. I saw where someone in another post mentioned to go through the turn signal hole.
Nothing is ever easy. _________________ 1987 Vanagon Westfalia (manual) - "Van Hildegaard"

You remove and install the antenna from the inside of the body. |
yup.. you pull it DOWN... not up...
and when you install the new one put some silicone sealant on the outer gasket... otherwise you will have water at the foot well later... |

i believe that one can also come up to get out... that collar is a tilting one so push it down, tilt the collar with a screwdriver and come up thru the hole.
Disclaimer... i've NOT replaced a Vanagon antenna but have other ones and they use they a tilting collar.
the ground connection to the body, thru the collar, is important for reception. i hate the design as it always gets corroded but with the new antenna, take a hook shaped tool and clean the underside of the body where the collar is tighten against the sheet metal. it's a design that works well on new cars, with antiques, it leaves much to be desired. but the increase in reception is pretty significant with a clean body connection. _________________ -dan

Did you win?
...
I have replaced several Vanagon antenna and can vouch for what has been stated in the posts. It will need to tuck down in the body channel void, almost to the turn signal before having the room to come out.

With the front grill and left headlight out you should be able to pull the whole assembly down through the hole and out. Putting the new one back up and into that space may be more of a challenge. The replacement I put it wouldn't go in there unless I shaved off a bit of plastic so it would go bak through the hole behind the grill. _________________ 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia "Von Westy"

Do yourself a favour and cut off the cable before you remove the old antenna. You can then tape the new cable to the old and fish it into place quickly and easily. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX
