The French might have something to say about that.

You're right, "voila" is French and means something like "here you are".

And of course it is spelled with a grave i.e. voilà.

My 4 years of school-boy French done 50 odd years ago has made me a linguistic expert. Not! Very Happy

There might have been a wee bit of tongue-in-cheek humor there, and I’m glad everyone has caught it! Laughing

Weddle has pulled through for me yet again! I love their online store! Shipping prices are a tough pill to swallow tho; I ordered an HD cross shaft, some washers and circlips, and both shaft bushings, with a UPS ship price of $26. I try hard not to complain about shipping prices because heck I work for an air shipping company, and even if I didn’t, most businesses can’t really lower their shipping cost unless they hide it in increased product prices. I’m optimistic that the next election cycle will bring a reduction in energy cost and an associated price decline for goods across the board!

While I’m waiting for the Weddle order, I welded up my new and improved inert ordinance gear shifter. Got a pineapple and a baseball waiting in case I don’t like this one Smile

You are so close! I've subscribed to this thread and read all updates but haven't chimed in too much. Great work getting it back on the road. Gonna be a great day when you take it around the block. I hear you on the shipping charges from Weddle. I bought three indent plugs for a transaxle and shipping was pricey for a such a small package. Was happy to be able to find what I need from them when I need it though. I see your horn ring is broken. PM me your address and I will send one to support the cause.

The hardest part today was getting that throw out bearing shaft bushing out of the blind hole! But it’s all done and the engine is back in. I popped in an HD welded throw out shaft with new bushings and hardware, all from Weddle - the holes for the bearing clips are a nice touch!
The rest of tonight I’ll be roasting coffee for some stores that carry our beans. Then tomorrow I’ll see if I can knock out the engine hookups and get the old girl started in the garage. Driving it on my five-year-owniversary looks like it might happen!

Four days ahead of my five-year-owniversary, which is only four years and four days behind schedule, I made the inaugural drive of the old bag yesterday!

Shout out to Casey for the horn ring - It's a great fit! I found out, however, that I have the dreaded "Horn honks when turning" syndrome, so enjoy this honkalicious video of the first drive yesterday:

Link

TONS of work left to do. I just got in a sealed SKF bearing to replace the stock axle bearing on the right due to the constant seep; the brakes need a bit more tightening, the 1967-only rear tin and preheat have to be painted and installed, etc.
But she runs and drives!! I'm SO EXCITED about that! Five years of scouring the internet for parts and rummaging around for NOS and good used parts; hours and hours of research; fitting, welding, finishing the pans! And rebuilding the complete chassis: Not a bolt or nut was left untouched! I reinstalled as many original parts and hardware as possible, including blasting and re-plating original nuts, bolts, and misc pieces.

The next stage is buying and installing the interior. It needs a headliner, carpet, mats, door panels, and rear seat belts. The seat pads and covers will come a bit later, since they're functional and not too shabby to drive in, and I haven't made up my mind if I'll keep the later high-back seats or try to find year-matching seats.

Applause Applause Applause
Hilarious!
I was maneuvering my Blue 67 at a car show 5+back and the horn was sounding with every turn of the steering wheel. Embarassed
I finally climbed out and disconnected the wire from the horn to silence it.

What was happening was, I had installed caster shims and the steering shaft was making contact with the column tube causing then horn to honk!

Congratulations on the first drive. I bet the kids were just as excited as you were with the drive.

Thanks y'all! All the kids ask every day to take a ride in the beetle now! I fixed my horn honk problem which was just the tank intermittently grounding out on the collapsible steering shaft cage. A couple more strips of felt under the back flange of the tank took care of it!

Now that I'm not worried about wheels falling off or parts exploding, I can hear all the other noises like my speedometer squeaking and my oil cap rattling.. The choke on the carb isn't working right either, it sticks open and then when the fast idle cam knocks against it on a cold start, the cam flips all the way around and makes the throttle plate stick open. So it sort of works haha. But not the way it's supposed to! I also saw the accelerator pump flange squirt gas out on the first engine start; I tightened the screws, but I'd be a lot more comfortable replacing the gasket there and putting loctite on those screws.

Tomorrow is five years; I've got a short backroads trip planned to drive the few miles up the road to Millington to fill my gas tank for the first time, and maybe even get some ice cream! To really be family-friendly, I'll need new seatbelts for the front, and a set for the back. There is no hole or plug on the C pillars for three point belts to go in the back.. lap belts should be just fine; the front will most likely be the Hummer auto retract belts so many people use.

I really thought the old girl had revealed all her secrets, but I was wrong! This evening, I rabbit holed the right side door on accident. It started with reinstalling the exterior handle, then I realized the key wouldn’t unlock it. So I started pulling the door panel off and now here we are, ready to order more and expensive parts! Surprised Laughing

The bottom of the door is full of leaves and acorns, which explains the greater amount of rust damage compared to the left side door.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Also a good amount of broken glass, which of course means the passenger side window isn’t original.

And I think it’s neat to find the felt pads under the door handle remote. I’m pretty sure one of the felt samples I ordered a while ago is the right size and thickness.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Those window regulators lube up really well with a molykote D321R spray - the lube lasts a long time, without getting stiff like a lithium-based grease, and isn’t sticky, like the light oil I think is supposed to go in there.
I haven’t rebuilt the door rubbers and scrapers yet just because of how expensive they are. But I really want a dry door.

1) The sunroof will, in fact, fly up if you go over 40 MPH and don't have the front sunroof guides installed.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I tossed the blue masking tape in literally right before I jumped in the car, on a whim... It works!

2) Got something wrong with the fuel system, it drove GREAT maintaining up to 50MPH with backroads and stop-and-go traffic. Then when we stopped for the first fill up, it didn't want to start back up after filling up. When it started, it acted under- or over-choked; it idled down and shut off, and wouldn't start again. I pulled the fuel hose off at the carburetor and had fuel coming out in small spurts while cranking; hooked it back up and then I got it started. Crossed the street, hit 4th on accident and killed the engine, and couldn't re-start it so we coasted in.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

3) Two scoops in a big chocolate-dipped cone is too much!

4) It was a great trip there and back. Started right back up at the ice cream shop, feathered the throttle till it idled, then maintained 45-50 MPH back with no further issues!

AND FEDEX JUST DROPPED OFF MY WOLFSBURG WEST ORDER!! So now I can have heat!
