It would still be a good idea to pull apart you engine just to get some idea of what condition it's in. Just my honest opinion for what it's worth.
I had a complete 72 AT engine took it apart and it still had the standard bearing sizes and before when I was working at Ford I washed the entire outside so it was clean. Had the heads done forget what machine shop it was they also did the rods and installed time serts because the plug threads were not great . Got new cylinder kits and German bearings and cam bearings , oil pump , gasket set . Put the split case in the orange solution hot tank they used for auto trans and hosed it off new push rod tubes and the crank and cam looked good new lifters and spend a day putting it back together. I flushed out the oil cooler. All the bearings fit perfect so there was no case wear. Used the same crank end play shims and it came out perfect. I didn't do the head stud inserts since none were pulling.
Every case as far as condition is different. The machine shop wanted to line bore it and sell me a reground crank I didn't feel it needed it.
I wouldn't do it these days since I don't have access to a way to clean the original case I still have. I don't have an engine stand either just did it on a bench. |

I still don't have a VW dedicated engine stand after all these years. But then I don't build a lot of VW engines either. In fact the last 3 or 4 VW engines I've built, I used a milk crate to build them in/on. Works pretty good, and is deep enough that the head studs clear. Plus I can add a 2nd crate to raise it up off the floor if I need to, or put it on my TIG table.

I spoke to Transaxle today and they were great ($850 on a complete stock rebuild). I also called Fat Performance/Rimco and they seemed really pretty expensive to me on a Stock Long Block cost ($3250). I got a quote from Brothers VW Machine Shop for $1650 assuming my case is fine. Because I have the original FI on the engine, Rimco said to pull it and sell it and install carbs. I will call Powerhaus tomorrow and see what they say/cost on a long block. |
Just as long as you get your type 3 only hockey stick back. It's very important that you do, as a t-1 hockey stick (while it'll work) has the set screw divot on the wrong side of the shaft. And the new ones that claim to be for a type 3 are drilled off (many reports on that on). Just something to be aware of.

Rimco has been getting bad feedback lately for their work, I wouldn't listen to their recommendation.
Brothers has done good work for me a few times, chances are the case will need to be line bored, and should be decked. They can check it and advise what they recommend. You might consider having them collect all the parts and balance the rotating assembly, then assemble it yourself. If you want an external oil filter, they weld fittings in the case to run a full flow filter system as well
You can also get some really nice parts from DPR if you want stuff that measures up properly, not like the cheap import products. The stroker crank I got from them was great, and they are made from the original VW cranks.

Attached is a pic of my engine plate number. One question I have as I look into the body is the original rim color of the car. I looked at the paint codes on Samba archive and it says Lotus White if my car is Lotus White. Is that the case?
