Hello All,
Was just referred to this website but I want to share my restoration on a 1969 Squareback. The vehicle was originally my Dad's and it has sat for the last 30+ years. For the last 19 years it has sat outside in the rain and sun.
This was its resting place for the last 19 years.
We had to spend about 5 hours of moving junk, whacking weeds, and yard work just to get to it. Luckily had a good friend to help me out.
seats are ripped and weathered and the back was full of old car parts from different vehicles.
Took the tank out and lugged it home.
It is pretty dirty inside. Got any home remedies?
Back seat is great and the paint on the dash is excellent.
I will continue to post photos and what not. Feel free to comment at any time, help is appreciated! |

Does anyone have any info about what fuel lines I need? what kind of length I should purchase in order to have enough to replace them all?
It is fuel injected. |

I would look for rust first. Take the carpets out and look at the condition of the floor pans. Then look underneath where the battery sits. Hopefully your rockers survived. |

Keep taking photos. Obtain service manuals. Check it over for rusted out floor pans as I bet they are rusted.

You have a lot of work ahead of you and at least 5K will be into it to make a safe driver. Mine sat for 10 years and about a year to get it to be a safe reliable driver. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

I dig the front rim and the factory roof rack. Has it been in a collision? Normally you can't see the ground looking through the spare wheel well. |

You'll need 25' of standard reinforced rubber 5/16" Gates etc fuel hose.
The old clamps are a little too small so you need 35 new hose clamps too.
The brown Volkswagen Service Manual Type 3 1969-1973 by Bentley is the best.
Show us some pics of the FI engine. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Like Mike said on the fuel hose, although some might tell you to buy the more expensive FI rated hose. Which ever hose you go with, use the FI style hose clamps, so the clamp doesn't cut into the hose itself. KTPhil has a great drawing of how to replace the hoses on the injectors themselves.
Ray recommends using Muritic acid (pool cleaner) to clean the rust in fuel tanks. Read the directions first before using, as you might want some rubber gloves before using. Maybe Ray will chime in here.
I hope this helps.
P.S. Don't be afraid to do a search of things on here, as quite a bit of it is already covered. I believe Tram did a great write up (in the stickies?) of bringing back to life a car that had been sitting for a while. It covers not just fuel stuff, but also brakes and some electrical.
Edit: Looks like Everett moved it, so you'll have to do a search for it. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Here you go:
Just be sure not to nick the center pipe when cutting the OG clamp off.
Also, be careful to measure the original hose length. If you make it longer, as logic might suggest, the fuel ring may hit the body/engine bay metal and break something or work it loose.
FI clamps look like this:
Not only do they not cut the hose like a work clamp, you can use a small socket and reach them to tighten them easier than using a screwdriver. |
