I've never removed one but pretty sure it's just a plug

The plug is tapered and you can use the original VW plug with a provision for a large screwdriver or buy a modern tapered plug in the same size (available from Würth in Europe) with a provision for a hex key wrench. |

I think this opening is a drilling for the oil pickup tube to spigot into. Also on the 25 hp engine there is no internal opening to allow the oil in this timing gear area to drain back to the main sump. I believe that by the time 36 hp engines were built, a drain back passage had been cut into one of the case halves. I would also guess that would be a OK modification to perform on those early 25 hp engines. That would allow all oil to be removed during oil changes. Please chime in if some has had experience in this. |

The oil drain-back passage question was recently answered in another thread:
PR entry reads: Jan 1950, from chassis 1-0138765, unit # 170086:
Crankcase: "Now: Oil can be completely drained off (passage through timing gear chamber)" _________________ "Criticism comes easier than Craftsmanship"
