Does anyone here have a side marker car with a front fender off?
Im looking for a pic of the location of where the side marker light wires go into the body, and what size the hole is for the grommet.
Thanks.

Check these threads; Bobnotch describes it well:

Thanks Phil... What I need is the location on the body and hole size on the body where the wires go through.
These are great threads but mostly focus on marker location measurements and how to wire them.

The holes are already there, one per side. I am told there is no ambiguity as there is just one anywhere near the area. I had ISPwest do mine so I have no photos of that area to show you. It passes through just one panel directly into the passenger compartment. I believe there is a closed rubber grommet there from the factory.

Maybe these will help.

You can see the wire sticking out about the bottom center of the pic.

If you notice, on the left side my antenna wire is in the same hole (bottom center of pic). I had to make my own fender hole on the fender for the antenna. I didn't want to drill another hole in the main body, so I used the existing one. Wink
I want to say the hole size is 13mm.

Yeah, got lucky I had those pics of it, as I was replacing the cowl section on mine.

Interesting. The holes are already there... Its been so long since I pulled my front fenders, I assumed those holes where fender mount holes. This is a '67 that did not come from factory with side markers. I guess it was easier at the factory to punch the holes in every body off the line. The holes do seem the same size as the fender mount holes..

Yup, that's it. VW probably punched the hole there on all of the bodies, and put a rubber plug there in case someone mounted an antenna on the right side, versus the left side (in countries without side marker lights).

Are the later cars different? All of the cars I've owned with side markers have a separate hole lower than the fender holes.

This is on my 64 with factory side markers:

Sorry was bored so searched for some others. Keep in mind that all type 3's through 73 could have side markers. Just other markets than US.

These are all earlies like ataraxia posed. I always thought that hole you guys first described was for the antenna.

I wonder if it's the difference between early and late 60's, since Critter's car is a 67?

I still look like that too Jason, only a little more gray added. Cool

The grommet that gets the wire through the body is applicable until 71 or 72, IIRC so the hole should be in the same place. I've not seen a late car with side markers so I couldn't say if the hole was moved but it seems odd that VW would bother to move it given the routing of the wire to the fender.

Krunchy was a 71 Canadian market car. No side markers, as it was a North American spec build (red tail lights).

So if the pics Notchboy posted have factory drilled holes for the side marker lights, then the holes on my 67 body (which are the same on both sides of the car) and on Bobnotch body would be specifically for an antenna? There is room in that upper hole for a couple side marker wires along with an antenna wire I guess. But I do like the idea of the separate hole for the side marker wires.

I’ll go ahead and get a couple small grommets and drill fresh holes for my wires.

On late model cars, I think it became a "what market is it for?" kind of deal. In looking at the pics of my old 71, I don't see any hole(s) for a side marker light. I did clip the front of that car due to excessive rust, so any holes in or about the same area as ataraxia's would have disappeared with the missing metal. The replacement metal didn't have any holes there.

Looks like an early-late thing? Notice the earlies don't have the antenna hole as well.

Going off David's pic, my 71 did have a hole there.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

No left shot of that area in my Gallery . Sorry.

But now that I know where to look on a late model, yes both the old and replacement front clips had a hole there as seen below.

So these holes must be in all Type 3s, and just be an early, versus late location. Don't know when the last year was for the forward lower hole, as mine is up high on my 65 like Critter's 67, and the late model cars.
