$200-$250 for an friggin aluminum coolant tank ?!!
It's purdy, and shiny, but this ain't no Porsche
Alternative: every 12-24 months, replace OEM coolant tank and cap ~$30.
? any reason this wouldn't be a good decision ?
never heard of plastic tanks going bad in 24 months or less.
30 YEARS, Yes the plastic is Too Old.

How much is peace of mind worth?
Time is money?
Supporting a small business that produces well-designed and durable products for a niche market?
I don't have one of these tanks but the day my OEM craps out I hope I have the extra cash for one.
This is exactly the kind of product I like to use to replace OEM parts that no longer have a reliable factory replacement. _________________ 89 Syncro GL Westfalia 2.1 WBX/WBXaustSS

The scheduled swap-out approach might work, except for Murphy's law of thermal destruction, which states that a van in motion will cease to maintain inertia at the most inopportune moment. The Meyle tanks can and will crack and dump their fluid without warning, or blow out the level sensor randomly.
Has anyone with a WBX tried to neck down the coolant lines and run a regular VAG volleyball tank as found in the Mk3/4 cars?

ordered one of these using the black friday coupon. i have a subie 2.2 in my van so i opted for the subaru conversion option, wish the website would've given helpful tips such as "unsure of what tank you need, measure the lower hose diameter" the tank i received for a subie swap had a fitting that was much to small for the hose the van had, i contact RMW and told them what was going on, he asked me to measure the hose inner diameter and sure enough, the previous owner who did the swap used the VW OEM coolant hose size so i had to return the tank and pay for shipping basically 3 times for this , lost all my savings i would've had.... long story short measure your line before opting for a subaru conversion tank. oh and for what its worth, van cafe doesnt sell just the fitting (i asked) |

Wasteful, and I'm not talking financially.

My first replacement tank did. Fortunately, it happened only a couple of miles from home. _________________ ~Kamz

I don’t complain much but cannot let this go .
First off I have a second generation “tank” it is not leaking yet.. and yet I cannot think for a moment that 3 “generations” of a aluminum coolant box is anything less than an excuse for poor / short sighted R&D or a just plain defective product.
[Blah, blah, blah...] |
The tank itself is not a defective product, it was the first two sensors RMW utilized that were not up to snuff, including the crappy OEM sensor, which was a constant issue with my van's plastic tanks.
For the record, I discussed my leaky gen 2 sensor issue with Mike in person a year ago and he was willing to send me a metal replacement at no charge. I could've taken him up on that offer, but with my van headed to Havasu tomorrow, I needed it ASAP so just bought a new one... and got a cookie too.

That's an insinuation not backed up with any data. Even your own tank isn't having an issue.
Again, it's not the tank, it's the early sensors. |
This was my experience with the 2nd gen , plastic bodied sensor that superseded the Original ones. Very slow seepage through the body of the sensor. Didn’t break when I removed it to install the 3rd gen sensor.
I too talked to Van Cafe. My purchase was just over a year old , so no warranty.
No big deal. New sensor was reasonably priced and super easy to swap out.

I’m guessing you love EMPI axle/CV assemblies? Swap ‘em out every six
months, but look at the savings! 😜 _________________ 1986 Westy Weekender

Yes. Problem? Simple. Don't buy it.

I had 2 brand new plastic tanks die each in less than a year on my wifes van.
Bought the tank, never looked back.

I only wish they added two more fittings for a visible level indicator......... but one adjusts, especially if you trust the low level switch.

I just use the overflow tank as it's clear and easy to spot from the licence plate. The overflow has a full line so it's easy to tell. Isn't that how you would check a modern car? Also for toping up I just put the fluid in overflow. No need to open the "tank". Am I missing something? |

Using the overflow as a system level indicator is not a reliable way. That's not to say that you can't, but if the return hose inside the overflow tank becomes disconnected, your reading can be inaccurate. Your overflow could be at the "full" line, but the radiator could be empty. |
