On my 1967 Beetle I got part 311971907 for this. fits 24mm opening.

Something isnt right though.

There is a raise lip in the trunk compartment where the loom enters from inside the body.

Looking at this grommet I don't see how it could stay in place inserted from either top or bottom as the raise lip would not let it seat and it would slip back out.
Second issue is I don't see how it is even possible that the loom could even fit through this opening.

Do I have the wrong part? what should the grommet look like in a 67 beetle?

Thats the part I'm holding in the first two pics. It looks impossibly small for the loom as well as appears to have no way to seat around the raised lip in pic three.

WW's version (the drawing at least) shows a groove to seat on the lip that I don't see on your grommet.

There appears to be a dark shadow just underneath the major diameter lip in this picture...could that be the wide/deep recess in the molding that is meant to accommodate the flange in the sheetmetal hole?

Also, is the bottom closure really thin rubber, almost like a membrane, where it would easily stretch and open up when you force the harness through it?

CIP1 and other vendors all show the actual part and it has a wide recess to accommodate the sheetmetal flange...unfortunately none show the pass-through hole. Though OEM parts images on the web do also show a fairly small hole for the harness.
