The oil filler tube on my '54 is a mess:

I'd like to replace it with a better one. Can anyone tell me what, if any differences there were over the years?

You need the one after 26 Nov 53 (This has a slightly smaller "head")

and
before 4 Aug 1955 (This is the one with the cap)

Here's an NOS example of what you need posted in the past by another user:

Looks like the top half might be ok? They go for around $100 lately so I'd try to revive the one you have first. is the pipe from a later breather the same diameter?

I cut the metal handle off of a broom and used it as the middle seat grab bon my 1957 Kombi for years before I found an original, It fit and worked quite well even though it was a little thinner than oG.

Thank you Everett!

Mine has been extensively farmered with brass and stupidity. I don't think it is saveable. I am trying to do a nice rare car some justice and make it as right as I can. $100 sounds like a lot to us but I also hang out with some Porsche and British car guys and $100 doesn't even get you a chocolate bar if you have a Jag or a 911.
