How have you tested the vac can? Has it worked previously?

Nos vacuum cans are not that uncommon. But is it the can that are shot or the vacuum advance/ points plate that are stickning?

That's why I was asking, it's not uncommon for the washers to disintegrate and the plates to not slide as they should, it's also possible for the port to be plugged with some crud as they are so small

Are you asking if the vacuum canister is rebuildable or the entire distributor.

The vacuum canisters are not but the distributor is.

You can rebuild your vacuum advance but it isn't really worth it. There are plenty of NOS ones around. Just buy a new one.

I would call the NOS canisters hard to find but not in the rare category. The ones you do find are old manufacture and should be fully tested before being installed.

as far as cleaning, don't soak them in any kind of solvent. The diaphragms are made of a speaker cone like paper.

The canisters were not made to be repaired or rebuilt. It would require a can opener type tool and the final result is not aesthetically pleasing.

The interior of the canisters is very well sealed from the outside environment. I have a number of canisters from BR 2 and 3's that are still good sixty-seven years later. There is an abundance of BR 8 Beetle distributors out there. Another option is to take a good canister from one of these core distributors.
