Just picked up a 56 ragtop. The guy I bought it from told me the tank was incorrect.
As I look through pics on here, I realize that there are 3 different types of tanks that *could* be correct. (Ill worry about the color later 😉)
Before I put a bunch of time and money into this, is it correct for a 56 that left the production line on 3 Feb 56? (Im honestly not sure if thats early production year or not.)

I think yours could have had the tank you photographed, or a non-ribbed front. See this thread for photos of all three types possible for '56 model year:

Incidentally, our October 14 1955 built car had a non-ribbed tank originally. _________________ 1956 Standard Sedan |

Interesting, I have only ever seen the smooth faced tanks. My late December '55 came with the smooth faced tank. _________________ 36hp '56 European DeLuxe oval, '70 bug 1835cc dual 36DRLA, and a '98 4x4 5spd single cab Tacoma |

Im contemplating going with original colors. The Birth Certificate shows L 324 Polar Silver with leatherette. Ive read (on here somewhere) that would infer a cream colored interior - which actually matches the back seat.
My wife laughs that Khaki and Grey (clothes) dont go well together

bigjerm88 that will be like mine - polar silver/cream. the years/sun has made the leatherette darken to a rich tan which I really like

Thanks all- I appreciate the insight. Im going to work this tank because I think its correct.
Those horizontally robbed tanks sure are pretty though!
That Cream colored interior is sure pretty when darkened up by the sun. Im not sure it would look as nice being so light.
As you guys can tell, the 3 links to the same question sure confused the situation.
May I push my luck and ask about the color now?
Is it correct that the color is more of a dark Blue (not black)?
Thanks again-Jeremy |

L29 blue grey, seems to be the colour but I don't think it is 'written in stone' as I'm sure there were instances and cock-ups at the factory that caused different shades/colours to be used. _________________ "we're here on Earth to fart around" kurt vonnegut

Yes, L29 Blue Grey would be correct on his 56. Here's the photo of the tank in my polar silver 56 for reference.
