Oh, and I also did a similar job on the pan, and I finally decided to go with a rubberized undercoating because of it's ability to silence small pebels and sand when they hit the pan. I don't have any photos right now, but might add some later. Also, my brother will be buying his first VW this Saturday! It is a 1966 Squareback, I will post photos once we get it. Just wait until you check prices on the plastic sunroof components and cables!

So I did buy all of the seals, as well bumpers, new front fenders, new taillight assemblies, and new sunroof cables (I had already bought tbe plastics a while ago). The total price was $1800. Then the cost for paint was $470, and I will pay somebody to paint it which will cost about $3000. I have decided to spend more money to have it look better. The paint that I used in the drains was rattle can, and I am switching to actual paint, but the color is very similar. Here are some photos of the color, there is a little bit on the top of the can.

Alright so paint stripping is finished, and actually has been for a few weeks. I finally decided to buy all new fenders because it will be much easier. I also began painting wheel wells and the bottom of the luggage tray. The brake drums also got painted with high temp paint that was made for barbecues. I have starteed body work, I am using Evercoat Z grip filler, thinned with body filler honey. I have also had to cut out rust and patch it. As of right now I am hoping to get the car into the shop to be painted in the next two weeks.

So I realized that the body seems to be shifted over 1 inch. The space between the fender and tire in the horizontal direction is offset both front and rear. Since I have no real way to fix this, and my tire is rubbing, I bought 2" narrowed everything for the front end. L
Along with disc brakes, and the camber nuts that let you dial in more camber. One of my front shocks was also bad so it was refunded under warranty at O'REILLY and I switched to KYB excel g front shocks. The beam that I had purchased was supposed to be stock height in the middle of the adjusters and 2 inches up and down from there. But, when installed it appears to maybe be 1 inch down from stock, that could be do to the new springs though. I discovered that the old springs were missing some of the leaves, which would make it less stiff. The car has a very stiff front suspension now. And, while it is a little higher than I would like, it still looks good, and it handles great. The caster shims make the steering return to center kind of. The brakes feel good, and after I finish bedding them in, it will probably be better. I also, ended up buying a new steering box which made a huge difference as well. I should be taking the car to the paint shop next week, and I will get it back in about a month. Oh, and I also bought a new hood, one without the vents. And it doesn't sit right, but I will have to deal because I already gave the hood to the store where I bought the new stuff from. Hey man, just read through your build. Glad you are restoring a nice Bug!
On your patches.....you should cut them out with radiused corners or create radius corners afterwards. I like drilling out the four corners, then cutting to just inside of the holes. I then file back to the holes if needed.
Right angled cuts have the possibility to fracture, or deform from stress. Radiused corners do not change, for the most part. They will with too much heat!

Here are some photos of the suspension install. Also, I don't know if I mentioned it but I did get a trw steering box. Also, I got all new tie rods from CB and they were only $30 for the set because their narrowed chrome rods are on sale. The beam install took a while because I couldn't get the leaves in properly. I think they or the beam was a little messed up, but I finally got it. Also, I had to cut the pads for the top of it in half to get it to fit. But, the install of the brakes was pretty straight forward and easy. The part I was most scared about was pressing in the races with a socket, but it was easy. A while ago I lowered the back using a angle finder on my phone to set the angle of the spring plates, it ended up working out perfectly and the back is about 1.5" lower than it was and probably 3 inches lower than stock.

The rear lower section of your right front fender appears to be pulled out. You should gently press it back by hand before painting the car. Position your hand at the bottom curve where the fender line transitions from vertical to horizontal. It won't take much pressure to bend it. |

Looking good. My 68 also has a sunroof. Ive replaced the drain tubes also. They run straight down tha a pillar and exit behind the running boards. Do you plan on running the stock defrost plumbing? That also runs on the lower portion of the a pillar to the heater channel.
There are three seals for the sunroof but its designed to "leak" through to the drain tubes. Theres also a metal piece that gets upholstered and clips on underside of the sliding roof. Folowing build , good luck |

I finally got the car back a few days ago and have been busy putting the sound insulation in as well as rear seats, new seat belts, carpet, and the front seats back. I just have to get the roll up windows installed and as that isnt something that I am comfortable with I will be paying somebody to do that part as well. The total cost of painting was $6700 not including the paint (over $400) or the seals/bumpers which were like $1400. I think I am about $13k into the car now but it is coming together really nicely so I think that it is worth it. Honestly the car looks better than I ever thought it would. I will eventually get it into the light and take some photos with a dslr and post them.
