1984 vanagon parking brake lever issue

Well long story short I am borrowing my buddies vanagon for a few days while car is in the shop getting repaired. I live In a sort of uphill driveway and when I parked the vanagon I pulled up the parking brake lever and though that was it I drove to work and noticed that it was loose falling off when I parked and these pieces were next to the floor when I moved the boot. The lever doesn't click and lock in place and I'm wondering how does this all go back together properly so it can lock in place again. Trying to stay calm since ei caused the issue and want to return the van as it was loaned out to me any and all help will be greatly appreciated
