I used to have an old Getrag gearbox.

would power be transmitted perpendicular to the V-sheaves via a 90 degree turned belt?

It could have used a hydrostatic drive or driven a generator with electric motors at the axles but it probably just drove a small gearbox. These industrial loco's didn't move a lot of weight or move very fast. I love industrial and narrow gauge trains. Model railroading is my other hobby.

would appear that there is a shortened side shaft diff with direct drive, and two chains to the two driving wheels.

Thats to my eye.

that eliminates the 90 degree transfer headache, but help me with "direct drive". meaning no shifting & a single speed? I can understand a cog on the skip axle coupled to a chain to a cog on the transaxle - a double set-up maybe?

Use an irs transmission. Adapt chain sprocket to the output shaft on the transmission connect chain to axle. You will have to put a sprocket on both sides of the transmission. Add a brake caliper to the sprocket like a motorcycle. Not sure how many years you will want to use, but a simple gate type shifter would give you 2 speeds forward and 1 reverse.
There are some people on the web building small tractors using this set up.

thanks. out of desperation in my lacking mechanical ability, i contacted the owner of my original inspiration. within three hours he replied with two website links that reinforces the information i got here with pictures. appreciate the help.
