I had two sets of Mahles about 4-5 years ago. Both had the AA logo ground off, and both sets had pistons that were WAY off in balance. Like 6 grams light on one. I haven't bothered with Mahle since.

AA pistons rarely need any balance work. 1 gram at most.

Unfortunately Mahle isn't what it used to be. Even though they are made in china, AA makes better pistons and cylinders.

position those spots up ward they wont hurt squat, just be sure to properly prep them first. ans yes cleaning is part of prepping. but be sure to look on the outer portion and use a good led light to make sure it isant gone all the way through....probably shouldent use on forced induction...( keep them out of the draft Shocked Wink Rolling Eyes )
but no they should not be that way....yes they can collect oil...no you dont want them to collect oil...thus position them upward or on side's depending where they are,but never down.

The guy who did the balancing on my parts and builds engines said pretty much the same thing. But said it’s more a piece of mind thing.
