Has anyone put a ring gear off a 40 horse flywheel on a 36hp flywheel? I pressed one off pretty easily.

I am thinking about it since the 36hp teeth get hammered by the starter.

No, but the replacement starter ring gear should be the same. Would be good if you updated the title to include "Flywheel". That way it is easier to do a search for volks in the future. Thought you were referring to a ring and pinion.

Why is your starter hammering the flywheel ring gear? Are you running 6 volt starter on 12 volt??

If it's the 12v / 6V spinning starter problem you can press a 12V ring gear onto a 6V flywheel. Same amount of work as 6v/6v.
I'm sure you can still buy new 12V ring gears too.

Not running 12V on the starter. Just noticed old used flywheels have a lot of tooth damage due to softer metal gear teeth. I would either put a ring gear on, or at least dress the old flywheel teeth with a small grinder.

Glad to know others have done this upgrade. Smile

If you dress the teeth with each two angles (using a hand file or small power grinder) so the starter gear is shunted into between the teeth of the flywheel, that should stop the tooth damage.

since Rimco closed I called Brothers they said they're not doing it yet . anybody else can press a 12v ring gear onto a 6v. flywheel --- I have a 36hp that s 6v I want to go 12volt . I also need to change the generator to 12v and keep it small

One can use the 6 volt starter on 12 volts since that motor is only used for short "starting" bursts. Best though to replace the 6 volt starter solenoid with 12 volt version to skip the starter gear from bashing the flywheel gear teeth too hard.
