What were the keys originally made of? I’ve heard some saying they were steel and some saying plated brass. Don’t steep keys wear out the lock barrels? |

I still have the original keys for both my 1970 and my 1971. These are both definitely steel, tested today with a magnet.

My 1970 and my 1971 still have the factory lock cylinders, and I've had these VWs since 1972 and 1976 respectively. Don't have any idea how many times these have been inserted and turned, but 260K on the 1970 and 135K on the 1971. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Seen made of both, more depends on the year and model. The chrome plating is going to be MUCH harder than the pot metal insides of the lock cylinder tumbler, so the chrome is going to wear the tumbler out sooner. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
