Wondering what anybody has done to use a simple tubular bumper without skid plate. Don't want to reinvent the wheel. Have searched. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

On my buddies car, I welded a piece of 1" sqr. tube to the bottom of the rear cross member on the forks. On the ends of the tube were 2 6" pieces of pipe that had the same ID as the OD on the manx bumper. I drilled through both pieces for through bolts to hold it in place.

Yeah - was thinking about something like that. Have to check and see if I still have the old bumper from my buggy and can mock it up before we paint the pan. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

I have a Bumper from CIP1 that I bought when I first built my buggy back in 2002-2004. It was the bumper with side drops on it and it has served me well.
We even got rear ended on our way to the Big Bear Manx club meet and it never bent except my hitch receiver that I had added a couple years ago to tow my little camping trailer.
It bent my rack up and twisted the tubing that was welded to the receiver but never hurt the bumper. it wasn't a very hard hit though.
I pulled it off during this winter's upgrade and strengthened the lower mounts that bolt to the Trans mount bolts. They used 1/8 inch flat steel so I made it out of 3/16ths inch flat.
Here it is reinstalled......I'll probably redo the upper mounts if I have time but they seem pretty good as is.
I am thinking about adding some tabs to the bottom so I could add a skid plate to it if needed. I don't offroad but watching all the Manx Club off road runs I am tempted to try one and would probably need that at a minimum.
Here is the bumper I bought way back when........It's more than tripled in price since I bought it.......

I added the hitch and the License plate mount. I also added a tab for a flag mount which I now use for my reverse light. It's a pretty solid bumper...or was when I bought it. _________________

That is the same one I have. I would not have put one on except that I wanted the ability to tow a trailer too. I am glad I did put it on now though as since I now have a type 4 engine in it with the stock crank mounted fan it covers up that ugly engine somewhat.
Yes the type 1 engine is prettier and does look "proper" in a Buggy!

As it turns out, the car owner has decided on a rear cage like the last 2 posts. Easy to do. Thanks all. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.
