well, it was coming along well until...

three screws snapped for the tent mount, all in a row on the top bar right near the passenger side hinge. not sure how to handle that, but i'm glad they weren't in the corners. i don't see being able to drill them out without making things worse.

that is why i turned my attention to the lifting bar and kept moving forward.

any suggestions for getting the three screws out of the holes?

The screws were into the fiberglass top and snapped? That is unusual.

completely rusted. i turned the screw head and that's all i got. not even a nub to get some vise grips on. snapped flush at mounting hole. no amount of swearing helped.

I'd leave them in and drill new holes in the mounting bar next to the snapped ones. I believe those screws go into a channel on the top so you should be OK there. Does that make sense?

there are "blocks" where the screws attach to the top. i was going to try and offset the screws and hope for the best. need to think on it.

applied another coat of enamel to the pop top lift bars and cleaned up the battery well and driver's seat area.

i fixed the ground wire on the steering column for the horn, but with the ignition on, touching the wires together does not sound the horn. i'll have to see what is wrong there.

i'm trying to decide if i should remove the swivel seat. the plus is access to the area for mounting electrical components, the minus is no more swivel seat.

You can do a pull out drawer instead of removing the swivel seat. Bolt some rails to the sides.

that seems ambitious and far more work than grinding thru the welds and cleaning up the rails. on the passenger side i can see doing that, at some point.

I just about never use the drivers swivel seat function on my '87 westy.

You could remove the swivel base and sell it off with the mounting plate for $150 or so and fund some other goodies in the bus. Very Happy

i guess that i could use that for a cooler and some dry ice, which would be far cheaper than a new fridge, 150Ah house battery, DC to DC charger, solar panels... but not nearly as fun to talk about around the campfire.

wrestled with the pop top lift bar brackets... removing them is not fun.

pulled the spice rack to gain access to the driver's side bracket, no problem.

getting the passenger's side off required lots of patience and pulling back the curtain rail and vent covers.

tossed the brackets in the ultrasonic cleaner, they needed a good cleaning and will get a fresh coat of paint.

installed the replacement kitchen lid support. i like rivets, but getting the rivet tool into the space was not easy.

the old fridge frame will have the long sides cut to make filler panels. trying to decide if the fridge rests on the floor or if it gets raised to the top of the opening. decisions...

Man, you are braver than I am with the dash. My Speedo has a broken needle and the clock, as I expected does not work at all. I'd much rather have a tach in there with an amp meter to go with the gas and temp gauge.
all the best on you find. i'll be following the thread to the end.

fridge is installed... almost proper. need to get the side trim cut from the OEM panel... some of those bits and bobs that will get sorted after this can make it round the block a time or two.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

the gap between the kitchen sides is 7/8th of an inch. i had some wood that worked perfectly. screwed into the wood using the factory fridge holes and using the screw holes inside the Dometic to fasten it to the spacers. i'm going to put a shelf under the fridge to carry the weight and just have the screws as anchors. i can fasten the cuts from the OEM panel to the spacer blocks, the blocks were set with the panel in place to get the proper setback.

fancy controls.

testing the fridge using the rectifier unit i picked up for the fridge. it plugs right in. the rectifier passes 12VDC making a single set of wires to the rear of the fridge. the rectifier and dc to dc charger and a fuse block go under the driver's seat after i remove the swivel base. tidy.

it's nice to have this back together and getting closer to having the lift bar re-installed. did a final coat on the pieces that needs time to harden. it's humid so it might take another day.

Got some work done Saturday...

cleaned and painted (poorly) the pop top lift bars. the passenger side bar was not sitting all the way down and had some serious tension on the pop top. after adjusting the bracket that mounts to the Vanagon, the bar now falls flat as it should.

wired up the 110VAC GFCI mini panel and the two outlets. replaced the outlet and cover from the brown to a more clean look. a grey outlet and cover might have looked better, but i had these on hand from an outlet replacement project in the house.

swivel base removed. it wasn't difficult, but it was unnerving to be showered in sparks.

found under the driver's seat.

that 1/2" lower feels real nice. once i get this running, i'll test this seat against the taller tin top seat to see which i prefer.

it's coming together. the fridge is out because it stopped cooling! took it in the house and left it connected to the 110VAC to 24VDC rectifier. compressor runs and gets hot, the fridge just doesn't get cold. hope the replacement works.

this guy was supervising.
