painting on a humid day means less than perfect results.
cleaned and painted, not perfect but a good start. i need to do some minor fixing in a few places and give it another coat. overall, worth the 2 hours of work.

these are the remaining "major projects" in order of importance:
overhaul suspension (already paid for)
change out headlights for e-codes, add DRL ($450)
new door cards - add power window relays and relocate switches ($400)
fix failed seam on rear left panel and deal with rusty front ($500+)
hammer out crushed rear right wheel arch and add terrawagen fender flares to hide the sins ($500)
maybe get the a/c working, maybe ($1000+) |
some light house keeping:
-the suspension is almost finished, just need to wrestle with the rear arms to do the bushings.
-converted to rounds for a fraction of the square codes. might wire the DRL, on the fence
-door cards and power window switch mod will be happening in 2022
-body work coming in 2022
-terrawagens in the budget for 2022
-a/c absolutely happening in 2022
of course this all depends on the 68 Beetle and what it needs.

Here in the East with our short highway sight distances due to curves and hills, DRL isn't really "needed".
Travel West where the horizon 10 miles away is in sight, DRLs are a must have!
Vehicles vanish in the mirages of distance.

I'll go the opposite on that thought. Here in the East where sight lines are short we need every opportunity to see a vehicle as soon as possible. DRLs help a lot in that regard. They are sometimes the first thing I'll notice as a vehicle comes around a corner. _________________ Dave O

limited sight lines and dancing in and out of shade with the sun at the right angle, cars can become invisible. for whatever reason, i have had more people cut me off or turn across my path while driving a Vanagon than any other car i've owned.
the Vanagon must be some form of Tardis, because clearly they are larger on the inside given no one seems to be able to see them on the road. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL Camper

Definitely Tardis shaped but who knows.
I have the old terrawagon 'fog light' version of DRL's and I really like them. They are not in any way fog lights but they are good DRL's. Come to think of it I do not get cut off very much these days at all.... _________________ Dave O

the weather Friday was pretty decent so it was time to freshen up the cladding.
wet sanded both door pieces with a little simple green mixed in.
not perfect, but better then they were.
more wet sanding and then a few coats.
the driver's side was damaged and repaired by a PO. it's not a great fix, but until i want to tackle it, the fresh paint will hide it for now.
before
after - not perfect, but from 10 feet away, it looks great. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL Camper

part of the plan for the Westy is to use it for ham radio operating. when i was putting together the 150Ah battery system, i included two 30 amp circuits.
the circuits are wired to a set of Anderson Power Poles next to a set of USB jacks for charging devices.
the vent plate came from CamperVanCulture.com in the UK and included the USB jacks and a jack for a 12V receptacle which i replaced with a PowerWerx jack set.
there is ample power to run my Elecraft KX2 HF radio (9 bands). it draws up to 2 amps at key down. i could operate for many hours with the house battery and still have cold beverages and frozen ice cream.
i have an Elecraft K2/100 which can output up to 100watts. it draws 20 amps at key down. setting the output to 50 watts reduces the current load to 10 amps at a cost of 3dB on my signal. in harsh band conditions, the 100 watts will be needed, or for contest weekends like CQWW.
the table makes for a comfortable operating position. i have yet to find an elegant solution to pass the coax into the Westy, i'm just running it out the open slider for now... or a cracked window or thru the pop top front screen. i have considered a bulk head connector, but i'm not sure where to put it.
the antenna system is a 20/40m trap dipole for up to 100w operation and an End Fed Halfwave for 40/20/15/10 for 10w operation. a Buddipole/Buddistick might be a future purchase... but i like instant band switching.
overall the Westy has been serving it's purpose being the foundation of some "epic" adventures. i plan to get on the radio a bunch this fall.

Have you thought about using one of the hookups for a coax pass through? You could probably double up solar and coax in one box |

the thought had crossed my mind, maybe when i switch to the Shur Flo faucet and eliminate the city water hookup... _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL Camper
