So...a friend of mine is working on his 003 from his VW 412...new seals etc. He pulled the final drive magnetic drain plug....and this popped out attached to it.

Now...from the picture below (stolen from the interweb thingy)...its obviously a drive shaft from the governor.

The thing I cannt remember...is if its possible for this part to come loose...or if its snapped. Its been 20_+ years since I had a govornor in my hand.

Looks like it came loose. If I had to guess, I'd suspect someone had pulled the governor once before. But IF this came from a working trans, I don't know how it got there, unless it was replaced and not removed (had an extra part rattling around in it).

I originally suspected it "might" be from previous work and that is what it turned out to be. His governor came out fine in one piece. This came from previous work.

Which also leads to the question of how it drives. As long as the end of the governor drive did not get between gears on the way down its no issue. But....each governor is adjusted/tweaked to teh valve body. Long ago I have swapped a couple and the resulting shifting was only very slightly different. Nit enough to make a difference. But I have seen people swap one and have major shifting differences. Ray

Yeah, everything I've read about them says they're supposed to be a "matched set". You might have gotten lucky when you did it way back when.
