Hi folks,
I usually hang out in the bay forum, but a recent headfirst dive into a 003 automatic brought me here…
Since the vacuum modulator in this 003 transmission is leaking, I'll be sourcing another. Bentley wants us to check and set pressures when changing the modulator, so I'd like to buy all the right tools from the get-go.
What fitting(s) will I need to install my pressure gauge into all the test ports of the transmission?
Thanks in advance!
Robbie
(Anybody with a 003 325 391 modulator for sale? Factory dual carbs, no brown or yellow paint marks…) _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

You might try contacting Ray Greenwood. He hangs out in the 411/412 forum, and probably has a list of the needed fittings.
As for a modulator valve, you might try e-bay, or the classifieds. Someone on here was looking for 1, and found 2 without too much trouble. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Since we’re on the subject of the 003 automatic I’d like to share my gripe. My tranny was recently rebuilt and has less than a 100 miles on it. Before it was rebuilt the whole car would shudder when you put it in gear and would stop
once you got moving or put it in neutral. When you come to a stop in gear it starts all over again. I really thought the rebuild would put it to bed but no dice! It’s really annoying and I’d really appreciate any advice on how to fix the problem. Thanks |

What some have found to get rid of the shake is to replace the motor mounts. Most are hard and flat, and don't absorb the vibrations any more. Some have gone to modifying Porsche mounts for replacement.
What you're feeling is the torque converter being loaded up (while sitting at a stop light or sign). This is kind of normal for these cars, especially with age. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Robbie, did you ever find a modulator, I have a couple in my stash, but would need to look up the numbers. |
I’ve got one coming off eBay, thanks for offering. If it turns out that the “A” suffix is completely untunable to work with dual carbs, I’ll reach back out. But I don’t think it will be too difficult...
thanks again,
