In prep for going down into Baja in March I am staging my '87 Westy in San Diego from my home in Maryland. (I can only get a week or so off from home from 'The Boss' at a time, so I plan my western trips in stages. BTW that is not a complaint, my wife Donna is awesome to allow me to travel without her while she works to support us and provide health insurance!).

I'll drive it out and fly home. Then I return to explore, fly home, lather rinse repeat. This year it is Baja in March, then Syncro Solstice in May and leave the bus in Denver, then Michigan and return the bus home in June.

Not exactly sure of the route yet, I need to track the weather.

Should be a fun drive. 2700 miles in 5 days. What could go wrong? (And if anything really goes wrong I'll tow it to a place from where I can fly home then return later and fix it and continue on. I do carry the usual spare parts.)

I'll update this topic as I know where I am going to be and if any of ya'll are on the way maybe I can stop in and say 'HI!'. Very Happy

Emm that is only 540 miles a day or 2 tanks of gas......

Me thinks unless you get bogged down for some reason, you will do it in less time.

That gives you more time to see some more sights when you get here!

Keep us updated!

Indianapolis and Phoenix are planned so far.

Hope to see you in SD too. Very Happy

Me and my van will be headed to Lake Mohave on the 12th. If you're in Phoenix before then, I'd be happy to meet up... if not, perhaps we'll see ya in Moab. Smile

If you come through Asheville and I’m not at work, beers are on me Dave. It’s the least I could do to repay your contributions here of both knowledge and positive attitude.

Be sure to bring a nice large piece of cardboard and keep it in an easy access area. You will want to have a look underneath a couple of times during your journey, and you don't want to lay directly on the ground. The other things I would suggest is waterless hand cleaner, paper towels, disposable gloves, eye protection (while under your van), and some trash bags.

I did a similar trip last year. I took a central route & went thru Kansas. I followed Waze 100% Cool

Try to fill up before you hit the CA border. Gas is over $5 a gallon there.

And an LED headlamp with spare batteries.

We're expecting at least 2.7 entries in the "Did you make it 1,000 miles..." thread.

I'm just glad it's not to make a "Stranded, donate what you can" sign.

I might be venturing to San Antonio and back in a few weeks. Approximately 3400 miles round trip not including all the driving while I’m there.
I like a rolled up thin foam shop mat from Woodcraft or other type place as a road side or working mat. Thin enough to roll easy, but enough cushion to help the ahem, old bones... Razz

Not true. $2.98 here on Sir Francis Drake in Marin County just North of SF.

I said at the border. The gas stations there are few and far between.
