I always thought this made sense. Has anyone done it?

It does make sense, but... not going to cut a hole in my floor for this!

That cooler air under the vehicle 'cause it is in the shade only works if you've been in one spot for a day. Pulling up to a summer camp the ground if not in the shade already is going to retain the heat so don't see that advantage.

If you have joined the ranks of chinese heater people or a $$$ heater you already have the hole in the floor cut-just let the air flow through the heater body into the van.

There are the normal dash vents or route the air through the door outlets to get air in lower or nearer the sleeping area.

Just my opinion.

I am not sure a top view of the gas tank or transmission would do all that much for the cooling.

Glad you mentioned that. I'm looking for an indoor project for my Vanagon (no garage) and rebuild of mine prior to install would be great.

I've thought of the hole in the floor, but really only after Mazda was going to to (or did) install a solar powered fan on some of its cars. I think open dashboard vents are probably enough for such however, at least for the low cfm fan I was envisioning.

I watched a video by him. He's one of those think everything out people, which is great. But likewise, I've been happy in the back of a pickup with air mattress and good sleeping bag - there is joy in super simple.
