I'm looking for a reproduction of the original top padding for my 67 convertible - *not* foam, but (as I understand it), coconut fibers. I have found the following two places, but I'm trying to see if there is a good source in the US. Does anyone have any sources they have found as good quality?

I've dropped him a note, as his catalog specifically calls out foam (as does M&T Manufacturing, where he may be getting this product). _________________ -Harry

Lenny Copp at West Coast Classic Restoration says he doesn't sell them, nor does he know anyone who does.
TMI has also stated they do not have horsehair/coconut fiber top padding (I guess I should have known that)
Wolfsburg West's pad kit uses foam
From Chuck (this story gives me pause):
"I purchased one of the last ones in existence for my 67 from the VW dealer in about 1990 , the cost was about $900 back then! kept it stored for several years before restoring my top for the second time ( i like you wanted the original “rubberized horse hair pad” ...this came with the original VW sticker and part number on the plastic bag it was wrapped and sealed in from VW...when installing the center pad and the window pads were so thick that i could not fold the top all the way down( about 9-10” from folding all the way down! had to disassemble the top and install foam pad which i still have 32 years later...eventually just threw the new original pad away, since it had been 3 years since purchase and by then ‘No Longer Available’ thru VW there no sense in trying to get a refund." _________________ -Harry

Looking at other postings on TheSamba, I found the following:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=328325&highlight=coconut+top+padding
That thread has some of the following pictures and information.
Below is what *might* have been the original top pad for a convertible - can anyone confirm with theirs?
Below is what the two places above provide (which is the same, I believe, as the seat material):
Does anyone know where to get the first one, if it is still available?
Thanks! _________________ -Harry

I've torn apart and juked a fair share of Beetle Convertibles pre 1968..
I can attest Karmann used the same coconut fiber as the seat pads bonded on a type of burlap material.
It is a bitch to work with to make smooth and lump free.
IMO... while not original, the modern dense foam available kits are more forgiving, doesn't deteriorate as bad, doesn't bunch as much and stays in place.

Just to verify, then - that is the second picture, correct (just trying to make sure I understand "on a type of burlap," which sounds like the first picture)?
Thanks, VOLKSWAGNUT!! _________________ -Harry

Edit...
I've think I've actually encountered both types over the years,, I will say.. the burlap backed ones stay together better..
When I drug my 67 convertible home from its demise in the junk yard..... .it had the coconut fibers hanging out of its torn black original top..
Pretty sure it was a backed type.. .

That fits with what Chuck replied with just today to a similar question I had:
"the horse hair pad in the top is different from the material in the seats"
It looks as though the original version is not made anymore (unless someone else can state differently). Perhaps I can get my upholsterer to make it, based on what's currently there, though. _________________ -Harry

Ok..ok...the top pad ...while may not be exactly like the seat pads...it surely seems like the same material with longer and coarser fiber material..
..
Suggest you scan Ghia forums..
Also...
At one time some of the Porsches were created at Karmann. Similar methods have been found across Karmann products.
Chuck is the utmost authority on convertible restoation knowledge..VW and Porsche.
