PostPosted: Sun May 23, 2004 11:12 pm    Post subject: bus #40 Reply with quote

a few weeks ago I sat down with a pen and paper and put together a list of all the buses I have owned and had in my possesion over the years. there were 39 splitties on the list. of course the vast majority of them have either gone on to new owners or have died so that others may live. I started out with a worn old '66 deluxe sunroof and since then I have owned every year of bus '55-'67. I have owned models 211,215,221,225,231,241,251,261,265 & 281. so last week I bought bus #40. I will post pictures sometime soon, but until then here is a teaser. feel free to speculate on what it is....

Lind here's my guess: 6th April 1961 kombi various options, but M192 is 'body ready to be fitted as camper'
So is it a 61 westy/other camper, special colour
Export code is missing.

here it goes:

production date=april 6th 61'

m199 =seat belt mounting pionts
m168=88a/h battery {6v)
m372=???mystery code,my bus also has this one,more than likely u.s. specs for lights,bumpers.
m139 =sealed beam headlamps and red rear lamp lenses
m156=larger oil bath air cleaner
m192=body ready for camper outfitting
m181=pretty shiny chrome hubcaps
231=61 kombi
sk 1023=westfalia paint code for turquoise/blue white
760596 =the vin #!
its a westy,so-33 0r 34?for us market,i don't think westies had the export code because they were shipped to the westy factory that was in germany so it would give you the false impression it was for the german market.{no two letter code!}feel free to correct me,however if i'm right ,what do i win?........Louis

what on earth does the SK mean? it doesnt look to be an export code, as it is in the wrong place and SK isnt even on the list. maybe it is one of those oh so rare westies that the owner personally took to westfalia for a camping interior?

sk stands for special color combination,nothing specail or rare about it.s=sonderrausfuhrungen{specail body}and k=kunsthharzlack{art finish resin laquer}westies were delivered to their factory in primer,cause westy did the painting thus the sk code.

Lind, is the larger oil bath air cleaner still there? My SC has this as it's only option and its not there. Don't even know what it looks like. I know Ploon has one but his was in storage so he couldn't send me a pic.
BTW, the brake linings are a go, just need to transfer some $$ into my paypal. I'll get with you later in the week.
Congrats on the bus! Looking forward to the unveiling!!

I'm at work so I'm just guessing but isn't it a Kombi with (M199) Swivel Seat option?

I agree but the swivel seat code is weird unless this code was used for flips seats too? maybe? Everything else indicates a 62 so-34 like my old one. Same color and all.

a mid 61 turkis / bw bus with pointy speedo pod...(but not my 15 window Sad ) How close is that one's VIN to JPs? ... his is slightly older than my 11 4 61 as well. sold in Germany with specs for US...probably bought by someone in the military over there, and brought over here later. (my 65 westy has a similar thing... and no westy code, but 108) Go on and post some pics. swivelseat westy??? that 199. i think early westys often got the bigger battery and chrome hubcaps.

does it have original front door panels with pockets?
