We got a new small dog last year and will be ready for Westfalia travel this summer - with said small dog. She's a Havanese, about 8 pounds, and LOVES travelling. She's been to Costa Rica twice and Bermuda once by plane and travelled fantastically. Loves riding in the car, usually being held by the passenger.

Now, how are we going to travel in the Westfalia? She can't sit on the front seat, can't be on the passenger's lap, and certainly can't sit on the front ledge!

Any of you travel with a small dog got any suggestions as to how you accommodate your pet?

Before anyone chimes in with "full harness and seat belt, facing the rear, in an appropriate sized kiddie seat in the back of the bus......" Yeah, I know.

Our new little sneaky naughty, sits in her bed between the front seats or on Mama's lap.

Sounds like your needs may be a crate? We have also let our pups sit in their beds on top of the chest fridge.

Chedd likes to burrow under the covers when the bed's stowed and the Van's rolling. She prefers being there to getting there.

Yes belted through straps on back of cube. Inside the cube has a tether to attach to collar or harness

Wow, what a lot of neat replies! Some of them sure had me laughing.
I think I'm leaning toward the basket or cube idea, between the front seats as mentioned by some. Would be easy to anchor the cube there, with tether for harness.
Thanks everyone.

My Golden rode like a King on the bed looking out windows and enjoying the A/C pouring down upon him.

Until one day about dusk while on a twisty road following a creek I came around a curve and there stood a huge Buck saying "MY ROAD!!"
I stood on the brake pedal and avoided the deer but poor Grover flew forward and off the bed crashing into the rear of the passenger seat.

Never again did he ride on the bed and sadly hated even getting into the Van.

I've found that a load net stretched across the back of the seats works well to keep the dogs (and the associated fur) off of the front seats.

We regularly traveled with two dogs in the rear, but we've had as many as four on board. Sadie the Anatolian did not like hwy 2 cresting the Cascades and dove under the gear in the way-back.

In our Weekender, the Yeti 65 is very close to the same height as the backwards seat and provides a great spot for them to watch the road. Another old Coleman cooler (dry good storage) lives between the bench and backwards seat and provides passage from one seat to another.

And then there was Syd. The Aussie that could sleep just about anywhere.

Sadly, all of these dogs have since passed. This spring will open a new chapter of the dogs of our lives, after mrs riceye finishes up her chemotherapy treatments.
