Bought new wires listed as being for VW. I’ve never seen wires with these sorts of ends. The rubber part comes off. Are these supposed to be put on just like this or are the rubber pieces supposed to come off?

It's a rubber seal, the original spark plug wires came with them, but over the years most manufacturers stopped including them.

Ok. So they stay on? Much easier to hear them click on without them but if they’re supposed to stay I’ll leave em.

And just to clarify I’m talking about the piece on the end. Not the witches hat looking things.

They keep air from leaking out from sparkplug "holes" in tins...

Ok. They just seem harder to fit with them on. The way they are shaped thought they were for something else.

I can't much think of a good reason to leave them on. Maybe on a water cooled car they'd help keep the plug hole a little cleaner, but if your luck is anything like mine it'll pop off and stick to the plug, making it a bugger to get out.

I’ve never seen these on any sets of plugs wires I’ve ever installed. Why do you have to be such a fucking asshole?

It's his job? Razz

you get too much dirt on the spark plug insulator, it can misfire. So that keeps dirt off.
You can also take them out every so often and just clean the insulators off and put them back in. Or replace them too often because it's a hobby and you like to spend money on it.

Then he’s a pro for sure.

Thank you and others for actual helpful answers. Appreciate.

There are some Mexico Bosch ones where it is just one piece. The end piece doesn't pop off anymore on those. The rubber piece fits a little better over the spark plug. I think they also changed to leaving the fitting on the end of the spark plug too.
