Last night, I started my vanagon (1987 Syncro) and turned the headlights on. Then the tach, clock (digital) and cluster lights stopped working. The blue high beam light was on but my lights were on low beam?? Then when I turned off the ignition and kept the headlights on the dash light came back on. Any idea what is going on? Bad headlight switch? Bad cluster? |

Hi,
I'd start with the usual suspects:
1/ Ignition switch (electrical portion). They fail often. Buy one, they're cheap. Swap it and see if that fixes your problem. If yes, yay! If no, yay too, because you now have a spare for wwhen the switch is going to fail.
2/ Clean grounds (ground tree behind the dashboard, at the base of the driver A pillar)
3/ As you pointed out, check your headlight switch. Install a headlight relay if there isn't one already. _________________ '90 Little Blue Truck, 2WD auto, FAS GenV 2.0 NA (AVH) |

Ok I think I found the problem. This weekend I was installing the GW radiator baffles and one of the headlights broke. I replaced it with a spare I had. There must have been an issue with it because I removed the headlight and put new bulbs in and everything worked great. A little strange but time will tell if that was the issue. |
