I bought this 71 Westy from the original owner's widow for $800 in 1991. Found a $50 bill and Gulf credit card from the 70s hidden in a small tupperware container behind the ice box, so technically I only paid $750.

Inspecting the brakes today. Who ever designed those rear drum brakes Evil or Very Mad ! Getting those star adjuster nuts free was a pain. The first one took a few minutes of flame and a hammer but that 2nd one was impossible.

Question: While looking for rear brake hardware they all seem to come with the compressed spring/round clips but my backer plate doesn't have any slots for them. Is that common?

iirc the kits are fairly 'generic' and the vanagon uses the same rear shoes but since is self adjusting uses a more floating mounting system..
so iirc the springs/pins are for vanagons.

The design is fine, you are fixing neglect. A VW requires brake adjustment about twice a year which keeps those adjusters loose.

Nothing major today. The wife used some wax on the zipper after washing the rear engine bay cover. The zipper works now. We also popped the top just to see how bad it was.

I gave up trying to weld it on the bus, so 3 broken bolts later and the F-Pipe was free.

It is my understanding that the F pipes are stainless steel and it takes special care to weld to it. I’m not sure how long that weld will hold. Personally I’d buy some used f-pipes. There are a couple in the classified’s right now, just be sure your replacement has a flange clocked in the same direction as your bad one.

When replacing F pipes it’s wise to anneal the copper doughnuts. I just did mine. Heat the copper red hot & quench in cold water. It softens the copper enough to be flexible to fill in any imperfections in the seat surfaces. Also wise to use correct ‘jam nuts’ one use only fasteners.
