We have begun our trip into Baja for our whale watching and Corona virus isolation adventure.
Our group is:
crazyvwvanman
16cvs and Jay
Rich
Chula Vista Bob
Myself and my friend Joe (aka the Maryland contingent)
We entered Mexico via Rt 5 into Tijuana at 9am and promptly got all our busses cat scanned in the big commercial vehicle sequestration area. Thankfully they only said my prostate was slightly enlarged and no polyps, see them in 5 years.
The whole visa process, cat scan, and entry took about one hour.
Our first stop was in Ensanada for the fish market (shrimp for dinner), tacos for lunch, bank atm, and liquor store for tequila (of course a tasting was necessary).
South of Ensenada climbing into the hillside there was a long stoppage for reconstruction of a landslide area. The wait was so long that the locals has set up street vendors.
At the end of the first day we made camp at El Papillion south of San Quin Tin on the Pacific coast. Shrimp and steak on the grill with fresh margaritas (tequila, Triple Sec, Roses Lime juice) for dinner followed by an awesome sunset.
Tomorrow we have an all day drive to the beach outside San Ignacio. _________________ Dave O

Hooray for trip reports!
It looks like the crazy multi-color van in your caravan is the cover van on the Vanagon Owners Group at fb...
Enjoy. _________________ - Jim

That multi-hued van kinda looks like the one that belonged to the French chef dude*, only it's been half-ass stripped of the artwork.

Aswah! His real name is Francois. His Westy was named Kaya. And he truly is a French chef. He sold Kaya and his last post was in 2015. He has a restaurant in Portland, OR, I believe. He did put plenty of love into Kaya.

I returned from Baja two weeks ago because of concerns my wife had that the border may be closed. I hope that doesn't happen to you and that you have a great trip. Lots of Mexican food here in Tucson.
Glad I was able to change my pesos back at 18.25 to 1. It's 22.62 today. The peso has lost a lot of its value.
Be sure to do a whale watch trip at Guerero Negro or San Ignacio.
Drive carefully, driving is the most dangerous part of going to Baja.

'Not sure of your itinerary, but consider highway 5 on the way back north. It is all new road to San Filipe and the quickest way back to the states without all the population. There are a couple of detours where bridges are still out from the storms last year.
California is on a shelter in place order from the Governor, so, there won't be any restaurants open. The restaurants here in Tucson are closed except they can still do takeout. It's a different world than when you left. They are recommending that all Americans traveling abroad come home, and hinting about US/Mex border changes which may come Friday.
Also, social distancing is the rule up here now, meaning keeping space between individuals so as not to spread Corona virus.
Good Luck, and again drive safely, Rich |

My understanding is that you will not be allowed to cross the border to start a vacation but you will be allowed to come home at any time if you are already over there. |
