I just might run the ( ring/shim ) just to prove I can make it work without leaking . . . LOL
This is starting to sound like a challenge . . . HAHAHA
And if you run a 8.5:1 with a stock cam in your motor and it works for you thats great. I don't
This thread was not a discussion about compression ratios. |

Just take a little off of the top of the piston and re balance. |

What kind of sealant do you figure is going to seal that .020 gap? |

The gap is .400 wide and .020 tall
Buy the shim and save your time and money |

On one of the leakers I broke down they used two paper gaskets sandwiching the ring. Looks like the order was as follows:
aviation gasket
paper gasket
aviation gasket
ring with orange silicone in the gap
aviation gasket
paper gasket
aviation gasket
I think if you used RightStuff sealant, clocked the gap to the top, and deal with case pressure it will work for a while. There is always a cost even when free, oil leaks on a beater is acceptable _________________ Grapes of Wrath $200 Engine Rebuild

Yo Rick, I broke down a few engines at United that had rings as shims. They were the greasiest engines I had ever seen. The ones on the 3/4 side seemed to leak the most and could actually see a clean spot where the flow of oil was leaking out. The 1/2 side was not as bad but still leaked a lot. |
Are you talking about United Auto in North Hollywood?
That place was never really known for quality engine building.
BYW. paper cylinder gaskets suck. |

The amount of stuff I learned from that chop shop was amazing. These were not the engines they sold but customer cores. One of them for sure was from an industrial farm application _________________ Grapes of Wrath $200 Engine Rebuild

I would say don’t risk having to break it back down on a $20 part. It ain’t worth it man.
Don’t “prove anyone wrong”.
Just do it right. _________________ 1776cc, CB crank, CB 2241 cam, CB light lifters, CB H-beam rods, CB light flywheel, Mahle forged pistons, A1 Sidewinder exhaust, Dellorto drla 40’s, Hoover modded case, fully balanced, fully flowed, heads by www.type-emotorsports.com, Air ride suspension by https://www.airkewld.com/?Click=3989 |

I KNOW, I think t's a great idea, too. My genius knows no bounds.
You're always telling us how well they seal. |
