Hey Guys:

Yes, I did a search and really didn't find any recent information. I need to replace the mirrors on this Thing and see a lot of options from Thingparts, The Thing Shop, and others with a wide variety of prices. It looks like I have a short arm on the left and a long arm on the right, which seems to work. has anyone bought mirrors lately that can comment on price/quality from various suppliers? This is a nice car, I'm not looking for the cheapest route but I also don't want to spend $300 on junk. I've bought mirrors before that I regretted buying- that didn't hold their adjustment for very long. It's a '74 but has '73 mounting brackets, I think?

Thanks!

The door hinge mirror mounts that you have are an aftermarket item. In '73 the mirrors mounted to the front doors via threaded sockets in the doors. In '74 the sockets moved to the side of the front cowl but these were prone to rusting out and failure so someone came up with the hinge mount which puts them in nearly the same place.

Your long arm right side mirror is a valuable mirror. These are hard to find and if you do they are expensive since there are no repros of the long arm as far as I know.

Your mirrors look to be in really good shape to me so I'm not sure why you want to replace them. Do they need new glass?

One other comment...the mirror on the left/drivers side could use a stem extension so that the door clears it when fully open and so that you can see better with it. As-is it looks to be just a regular bus mirror that someone has installed. There are people selling bus mirrors and calling them Thing mirrors but they really are not the same. A set of bus mirrors with stem extensions will work and you can usually find them in the classifieds here.

Just FYI, here is an option.
I have never seen them in person (to judge the quality), but there it is.

Yes, you need the extension on the driver side mirror.

The Thing Shop seems to have the best quality-give them a call.
