57 bus. Can the shift linkage , the shifter ball to shift rod, get so worn that I end up with a lot of sideways movement.? Seems fine otherwise. M clip is in good shape along with the spring bushing inside the tube.

I would think it odd to get a lot of sideways wear in the ball and socket.
The majority of the forces when shifting are fore and aft, so one would expect that to be higher wear than side to side.
Also, if there is significant wear on the shifter ball/socket, you may have a hard time finding 3/4 or 1/2.

Have you checked that all the grub screws are snug in both the linkage couplers?

I never seen the ball/cup worn out from side to side movement. I'd have someone wiggle the shifter while I crawl underneath and inspect it. Looking for play in the linkage. Also maybe the hockey stick inside the transmission could be worn a bit.
