… picked up a fabulous (VW Authorized) Terry Shuler 1/52, reprint owner manual, bought new by (and purchased from) Stock Steve as he sold his '50 deluxe - what a beautiful and informative publication... sure would like to find a split shop manual...

… okay, I have that one, you are referring to, a 1952 to 1955, but it is Zwitter through early oval - a great publication - I was really asking about pre Zwitter or pre 10/1952

Ok, I suspected that might be the case.
I don't have one myself.
I know there is an earlier parts book, not sure about a shop manual.
Curious, I did a search in the classifieds old ads for
49 shop manual
1949 shop manual
50 shop manual
1950 shop manual
51 shop manual
1951 shop manual
Nothing came up
I also search for manual alone without shop but it was all owner's manuals and parts books

| There is the ”Reparaturleitfaden” from 1951, which is the Split Beetle workshop manual and is excellent but only in German and hard to find. The 1952 book is for the Zwitter but has some info on earlier cars too. The 1952/54 version (and later version 1952/57) has nothing on Split Beetles. |

This wasn't published by Volkswagen, but it is a comprehensive 86-page manual, published by American forces in May 1949, and printed in Frankfurt. I've owned it for well over 50 years now.

… Also picked up a Floyd Clymer illustrated instruction booklet - a reprint of the postwar German VW instruction book... in English and German, on the opposite, corresponding page - might be a similar publication or a shortened version - this picture is the same.. illustration 10, controls.

I always assumed the blocky serif font used here was a later adoption by the German VW company... but this implies its use started while still under British or other occupation authority, no?
It is the basis for the Bus and other badge lettering, as well as many manuals and bulletins, and even the US dealer signage:
