The Kenyan mod leaves you with 12 "active" tooth flanks, whereas there were previously 15. So you can see this is well within the margin of reliability. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

So, if the "Kenian" repair is an acceptable practice (provided there are no new/good used parts available), why did the $3k trans have so much metal in the gear oil?

This is where I begin to speculate based on limited knowledge and where someone who hasn't had their hands on the transmission would need to speculate as well...
The Kenyan gear looks terrible but a few folks say it's a valid repair.
Other things that are far less visible and could result in the chunks in the oil. A dirty case with previous junk in it, worn or poorly sleeved case or a bad gear carrier (my transmission took core dings for a bad gear carrier and a case that needed to be sleeved) as well as other things like the bad ring tooth shedding bits (frankly, I don't know what that bad ring gear tooth would do and if it would show up in the oil).
My guess is that the Kenyan gear wasn't the primary problem with this transmission repair but it sure is the ugliest.
I'd love to hear more from the experts. _________________ - Jim

Current: 1990 Westy Camper - Bostig RG4, 2wd, manual trans w/Peloquin, NAHT high-top, 280 ah LFP battery, 160 watts solar, Flash Silver, seam rust, bondo, etc., etc.
Past: 1985 Westy Camper - 1.9 wbx, 2wd, manual trans, Merian Brown, (sold after 17 years to Northwesty who converted it to a Syncro). |

I'd guess the pinion depth was set incorrectly .. perhaps the reason a chip broke off the heel of one ring gear tooth. I hate those 4.83 R&Ps .. 4.86 is far more reliable. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary
