Ive got an 81 aircooled. The alternator has now burned out 2 of my voltage regulators...
So im thinking shes shot.
Instead of getting another stock alternator (they are 55a or 65a, right?). Should I upgrade the alternator?
i.e. (https://www.qualitypowerauto.com/item_447/VW-Vanagon.htm)
Ive got a battery isolator in there, and will be dropping a second battery in shortly for internal aux junk.
Thoughts? |

I bet there's info in the Bay forum about this.
Depending on how you wire things up, if you upgrade to a higher output alternator, you might want to look into upsizing the wire from alternator B+ akin to what the WBX crowd would do. It may be there's two B+ posts on the higher Amp alternator or room on the single B+ connection for another connector to a new wire. Then run that to the battery isolator.

If you want your heat to work then staying with the stock style alternator is the easiest option. |
