I just got this video from my other car club. Fitzee's Fabrications page is amazing and he is a natural at teaching. This particular method blew me away, unfortunately limited in use. What was amazing to me was his 45 degree angle cut to limit the opening. I can't wait till school is out and I can get my MIG out to play. I'm watching his YouTube's like they are Netflix now, enjoy .

Have you considered simply starting with a nicer bus? I don't know what your skills are, but the race is easier if you can see the finish line. If you are not a runner, don't start off doing a marathon. |

That is a great technique. I've got some apron work to do inside the wheel well that doesn't require it to be this pretty but I might try it. No one will see it but I'll know . I'll probably mig weld it although you can get nicer spot welds with gas and less grinding. |

The YouTube algorithm must be working overtime trawling The Samba and other car forums. This video appeared in my recommendations a few days ago. I too was amazed by it but You beat me to the post. Someone posted on The HAMB that he used to post tutorial videos there before he moved to YT. I have a panel tacked in place ready to be welded in using his method.
I posted a comment on this video asking him to cover the specifics for butt welding sheet metal and he replied that he will include it in a future video. I can get good looking practice tacks on inboard metal but the minute I get to the gap I end up Swiss cheesing the metal. I will wait for his tutorial before I move ahead with this repair for the second time

Evil_Fiz, that was my concern as well, doing great on the tack and then the butt weld turns into Swiss cheese. I have't had that problem in the past but I was fortunate to have a pro help me set up my new Lincoln MIG. If I were you I would try Fitzee's MIG settings as seen in this YouTube.
I also follow HAMB it's a great site. Can you post before and after photos either here or in your own thread as we all learn from others

I did just that and spent about six hours playing monkey boy with the welder settings. I also tried several suggestions from the Eastwood videos. I know I am at a bit of a disadvantage because I am using .030 Flux core instead of .023 MIG but I have seen others succeed with the .030 (long story on why flux core.) I have a further disadvantage because I suffer from retinal degeneration and night blindness so lining up the wire is a bit of a chore. I'm not making excuses, I'll get it figured out eventually.
Thanks for the tip and encouragement. I'll shoot a video of what I am doing and how so the experts can pick it apart and offer much needed advice.

Evil_Fiz, when you say you are using Flux core, is that MIG without gas and it uses flux to keep it clean instead of argon? I'm no expert but have and use oxy acetylene welding and arc welding. I am a slob with arc but I am like a seamstress with oxy acetylene
I have received great suggestions from the body paint forum, maybe they can help dial you in?

Looking forward to seeing your success! I can hardly wait to open up my garage and start welding again, its so much fun and productive. Hummm that is probably why I love this silly auto hobby "it's so productive".
