62 early B cab. Took out of winter storage storage for first drive. All went well for about 20 miles when I noticed significant trans grinding going into reverse & difficulty going into first w/o grinding. Thought clutch cable adjustment which I did per shop manual. Added about 1/2 pint GL 4 synthetic trans due to a all leak at front of trans. Took it for another drive and all was good for about 20 miles when grinding returned.
Both ends of cable look good with no fraying of strands.
Clutch & t/o bearing, boden tube & cable have 25 K miles, with no slippage. T/O bearing is upgraded 911 bearing retrofitted from Registry article in 2006.
Any ideas?

Should add engine professionally rebuilt 10K miles ago by same mechanic that did the clutch & T/O bearing in 2006. He indicated clutch & T/O bearing still looked new. He has since retired, damn! |

Well, we all like solutions when problems are reported. Turns out to be multiple issues. Theory is the pilot bearing partially seized when hot and would not allow the clutch to release for 1st and reverse gear, but allowed 3rd & 4th to shift OK. Also found the main trans shaft was bent.
No theory how the shaft got bent, no unusual vibrations.
Had Vic Skirmants rebuild the trans, he found additional worn /broken parts.
New clutch kit, release bearing, gland nut & shifter bushings and I’m back enjoying my 62 B Cab! |

I had sort of the same problem once. Clutch would not completely dis-engage.
Adjusted & was fine for a few days, same thing several times. Took it to a Porsche specialist shop. They adjusted it. Same-o same-o.
I finally figured out the problem. The shaft the throw-out is connect to (inside case), has the arm outside that the clutch cable connects to, well, the arm is welded on to the shaft. The weld cracked, so the shaft was, although tight in the arm, the weld was not there, so the arm rotated a little bit each time I stepped on the clutch. Ran a weld bead around the shaft end/arm & its been good for almost 50 years!
