I bought an Hella spotlight mirror here on The Samba for reasonable money.
In the picture's shown in the ad is visible that the socket area underneath has a problem.
Glass diameter is 82mm total. I will probably use an second hand or new motorcycle mirror.
Today i dismantled the spotlight.
The Hella model sticker is still present at the reflector.
Model 80/140 6 Volt 25 Watt
Detail shot of the inside switch, you'll have to turn the mirror to the turn the spotlight on.
Luckily the clamp is still present, spare parts are hard to find.
Removed the plastic bush to see the damage at the socket.
Behind the mirror glass
Front glas and reflector are in very good condition.
Luckily i met a guy here in The Netherlands who is also restoring a model 80/140.
He provided me with a lot of detailed picture's which will help to restore this one.
Details of the bolt. (All measurements are in millimeters)
Details of the socket. (All measurements are in millimeters)
My next steps will be searching a hard plastic ball and try to recreate the socket.
Will update in the future.
Leads for spare parts are welcome, PM please? |

If you want to remove the mirror housing and separate it from the headlight bucket you'll have to do the following:
Remove the tiny split pin and the switch contact plate.
Use some penetrating oil at both sides of the pin.
Tap it out to release the tension on the two spring plates.
Reconstructing the bolt is the easy part.
The plastic balls are easy to find, the bolt i used comes out of a Kreidler motorcycle frame.
Drill the bout out for the wire and use a saw to shorten.
Glue it together with the ball and you're done.

I have a 1955 Hella parts catalogue.
These are all the pages mentioning the model 80/140.
The fully chromed Hella spotlight mirror (271941205) was 30 Deutsche Marken.
The primered Hella spotlight mirror (211941205) was 25 Deutsche Marken.
"Suchenhalter" is a mirrorarm , the one for VW was 12 Deutsche Marken. |

Here are some detail photos of the switch.
Mine is broken in half and i'm in doubt if i'll repair it with super epoxy, or let it get scanned and 3D printed.
