I read through all the threads I could find on this topic. There's a fellow on page 7 of this Thread (cutter57) that bought the carbon in bulk and was selling it in smaller amounts.

Ok, trying to trace vapor lines in the car. It appears that one of the right side expansion tube hoses goes to a narrow plastic pipe that travels to the left side of the car near the brake reservoir lines. Under the car the plastic tubing connects to a narrow steel tube. Anyone know where this goes and where the other end is? Perhaps through the center channel to the back of the car?

Number 14 in this diagram is the soft hose going down beside the soft brake hoses. Number 6 is another steel tube that crosses to the right side of the car. Number 8 is the steel tube that runs to the back of the car under the right edge of the pan. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle |

Number 9 (two of them) are rubber grommets where the 12mm hoses pass through the side of the engine compartment. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle |

Ok, just received the used charcoal canister that I purchased through TheSamba but I think I might have gotten the wrong one! It was labeled for sale as a 72 SB charcoal canister. When I got it, it only has one small pipe on each end, no large pipes like in the diagrams posted on this thread. It also has a "T" connector with cut off hoses on one end. Darn thing feels totally empty!? Anyway, do you suppose I can use this canister? I can see one of the hoses could go to the carburetor vacuum on the engine...where would the other one go? The other side obviously goes to the fuel vapor line from the tank.

That's not the correct canister for a 72 Super. Might be for a later model, but I don't see anyway of using it for your application. A 72 uses a push/suck method of pulling out the fumes.
Yes, beat me to it. It should look like the one posted above.

The one you received looks like the non-super-beetle expansion tank that goes in the front (not sure which years; left side of the above image). _________________ 1971 Super Beetle |

I know on the correct large pipe, one end goes to the fan shroud and the other goes to the stock air cleaner. I don't have a stock air cleaner...I have a Dellorto carburetor on my 1915. Any suggestions where I might put the other larger hose? _________________ 72 VW Super Beetle |

Let me throw this in. The small tube that runs along the floor pan and follows the curve of the rear fender to the charcoal cannister on my Super is a blue plastic line. The steel clamps that secure this line were crushing the plastic...almost everyone. Well that means vapors will get blocked and backup. This can certainly cause a smell problem. Is your line steel or plastic? Difference is my baby is a ‘75 injected. |

72VW, you bought an expansion chamber. It’s not a charcoal canister. That’s why it’s empty. It’s a chamber that merely collects fumes, and it’s located in the trunk.

With so many Volkswageners having EVAP issues lately, myself included, I think this would be a great opportunity for a maverick aftermarket supplier to provide viable EVAP system options for '68-'79 VW owners. I am grateful that I was able to buy new breather tubes and fuel filler, but new plug and play charcoal canisters, expansion chambers, fume traps, etc. would be nice additions. |

I repacked a charcoal canister with fish tank charcoal for my sons 72 sb. He wanted everything stock also had gas smell. The smell in his car was coming from the cloth braided hoses behind the dash that connect to that plastic tube thingy figured this out after replacing filler tube, sending gasket and every soft line in the car. Just curious after you say its a 1915 with a dell carb why would you want to use the canister? Are you going back “all original “ or for environmental reasons? Anyway if you use the cloth braided hose for anything it should be replaced every year or two its more of a novelty for original restorations than a long term fix imho. |

Simply trying to hook up the fuel emissions system close the way it was, especially because I keep getting gas fumes. All my gas lines/vent lines are new except for what runs under the car to the rear which I never did anything with...hence, (didn't understand it) I didn't understand any of this while stripping the car down originally, getting rid of parts I didn't know I needed. I live in Southwest New Mexico where the heat is quite severe in the summer so now that the car is near complete, I have the gas smell. So, like I said, I have a Dellorto 40 carb on the engine so I have to figure out where I place the hose that normally would go to the pipe on the original air cleaner horn. Perhaps I can make something to work... _________________ 72 VW Super Beetle |

When I re-installed the fuel tank on my 1970, I had fuel smell from a small leak at one of the fuel filler hoses. So I got new hoses, damn factory ones only lasted 48 years !!! _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each.
