"A-21.02.1" is not the serial number, but the pre-August 1954 part number for the left-hand casting. The old part numbers were found on split-case transaxles until well into 1955.

The actual serial number will be on the right-hand side, immediately behind the nose cone.

The case halves were cast 13 May 1954.

The serial number will be on the side where the starter mounts, at the front.

There is a possibility this is a unserialized replacement case. There were problems with the early 3-synchro, split case transmissions and many ended up rebuilt or replaced.

This is a Bus but same idea

This is the right side of the transmission and next to the nose cone.
Note: Nose cone is at the top of this photo so rotate it in your mind if it's confusing Smile

I thought 2A was Bus.
In the Bus charts I'm guessing that falls somewhere around May, 1954
The charts are not complete filled in though (lack of data)

252731 is May, 1954 in the Beetle charts but it's just A-252731 without the "2"

I am building a 56 oval I bought in pieces. The trans serial # is A2784336. I think this means its a type 2 transmission from early 59. Did I get that right? If so will the gear ratio be wrong for my type 1. It seems to fit the chassis and shift OK.

Buses have a leading "2A-"

A2784336 looks like a transmission from Janauary, 1960 from the Beetle VIN charts

1960, the 28 PCI carb with a choke ended with the introduction of the electric choke 28 PICT carburetor in 1961.
