1970 Blue Vert auto stick is now up for auction. The best thing it has going for it is a mostly original interior that is in decent condition.
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1970-volkswagen-karmann-ghia-convertible-17/
As is so common, lots of previous body work that looks to be sub par. The nose and rockers show obvious body work. At the right price it would be a fun "driver" but it would need a huge investment to return it to proper condition.

I notice that quite a few 1970 and 1971 verts have the auto stick. ???

In general it seems like a disproportionate percentage of Ghias on BAT are autostick.
A friend of mine bought the Saturn Yellow ‘74 autostick that came up on BAT recently. That car flew under the radar and he scored on it. All original, 53k miles, an unbelievable survivor that no one picked up on, so there are deals to be had on BAT. I mention it cause I rode in it and have to say I’m impressed by the semi auto gear box. He dialed it in and it shift fine and I didn’t notice any difference in power. But a reputation is a hard thing to change and I bet this one suffers price wise mostly because of it being Autostick and not because of shoddy bodywork.

So many were done on the side in collision shops or the someone who fixed his beetle back in the day. Once they start work they quickly realize that these are not your ordinary body. So many have ended up with this result.
The classic car "dealers" have really jumped on the painted pig bandwagon lately. Cruise on over to Ebay and look at the Ghia's they are marketing. At least we can hopefully help a BAT buyer make an informed transaction.

Bunch of over priced mediocre turds on EBay.
Samba prices have shot up too for mediocre and bad cars.
It’s really hard to find a nice Ghia, like you pointed out that long period of low prices on Ghias has left most in very poor condition.

Don't forget Craigslist - the spot for uninformed sellers? I bought my '65 there for $800 and have seen some other eye-dropping bargains there. Parts too.

FYI Television Network has been carrying the BJ Scottsdale auction this week.
Looks like the 58 will be #27 going across the block Saturday. Coverage starts at noon. I guess it will be a toss-up on whether it will be televised.

It WILL sell for more than the $15,000 it got on BAT. It is truly a problem Ghia but NOBODY that bids will care on BJ. Oh, Uh, that will be another gin and tonic please. Not more than 10% know enough about what they are buying. That is why BAT and BJ flourish in a COVID environment.....more time on their hands. Covid is only used as a reason to do stupid stuff.

Is Barrett-Jackson more costly for the seller?

A very nice Austin Healey fell in my lap last year and while it is a near concours car I have no desire to keep it so it will be in the RM Sotheby's Arizona auction later this month. I am pretty sure the cost structure between the auction houses is the same.

For some background I certainly could have done a BaT auction but since I know nothing about these cars I would be a dud as an engaged seller and I really don't want to stay glued to the computer for a week deflecting answers about a car I know nothing about. I have a friend at RM so I decided to go that route, but man is it expensive. First you pay a $1,000 marketing fee to get started. They send out a photographer to take pictures which are much nicer images than I could ever take. The listing with full description and pictures is put into a full color catalog that gets sent to thousands and thousands of their regular clients, same with their website. Here is the actual listing:

https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/az22/arizona/lots/r0046-1957-austin-healey-100-6-bn4/1196273

If you look at the pictures that's me driving it and yes I am that squashed and uncomfortable, nothing like the Ghia as far as roominess.

Then it will cost me $2,500 to have Reliable carriers pick it up later this week and take it to AZ and when it sells, RM Sotheby's gets 10%.

OUCH

But this was the Easy Button personified. I didn't have to do anything but make a few calls and since the car cost me very little to begin with I am fine with whatever the outcome. it could be plus/minus thousands vs BaT but the effort on my part was virtually zero and I am looking forward to the experience of auction day. No, I won't be there in person but I will be paying attention online that day. If anyone cares I'll post the results when it happens.

A followup to the Healey auction at RM Sotheby's in AZ. I know it's not Ghia content so I'll be brief. The car sold for waaaay more than I ever imagined and there is no way in my mind I would have gotten near that with BaT. Even with all the expenses and fees the net is still a lot more than any Healey 100-6 I've seen on BaT.

1970 Convertible bid to $16k. Reserve Not Met.
That should have handily sold for $15 IMO and the seller should have been thrilled to get it Confused

Lots of weird stuff going on with that body. Door gaps on one side were really bad. I bet if you peel off that paint and bondo it’s a horror show.

It reached an appropriate price assuming it's indeed driveable as is with no mechanical problems. But it's had the rockers replaced (as evidenced by the aftermarket drain edges and a lot of Bondo work. So whose to say if the rocker replacement included the strengthener pieces as well?? Too many unknowns to value it any higher. That dash looks very original though which is amazing. Unfortunate that the nose ridge shaping was totally botched.

That says a lot about BJ Auctions. Wow! The Seller is laughing all the way to the bank!! That's where BAT has advantages for buyers who are smart enough to listen.

I swear people buy turds on BJ so they can say they bought it on BJ.

ANOTHER blue T u r d on BAT. Man do they know where the TURD ghias are. When is something worth buying going to arrive. Oh, I forgot it is BAT.......Bring all Turds. This one has something wrong for everybody. Paint, carpet, seat covers, bumpers (earlier style) on 72 Ghia. Dash has been trashed also. Even right down to the lack of interest in painting torsion hole cover. Like I said "another blue turd". Wow, its already over $6000 with 6 days to go.
