Just got this in from Bus Resto Parts and I have to hand it to Auto Wares they make an amazing split screen convex mirror. They have both options in chrome or patina of course I choose patina to match the original drivers side, but truly great detail work.

Forgot to reseal and redo the air fresh box months ago so I reminded myself when the flap stayed open and debris kept hitting me in the face.
Drilled the rivets out to take out the original crusty seal.
Then they got a CLR bath and was pleased that it had most of its original paint.
Now just waiting on parts so I can put it back together with new rivets and seals. _________________ 1951 Split Standard Hoffman Build

Glad to help. It has the perfect stance once you got it dialed in. |

Repost but for a purpose!
Not another hijacked thread but I do really want to thank Greg Banfill (Vintage Warehouse) for all the help on this build not just for creating great parts like the full suspension front narrowed adjustable beam with disc brakes and dropped spindles, rebuilt tranny, drop plates and rear brakes but truly helping me navigate parts with do's and don'ts and goods and shitty's with this build. It is refreshing in our community to have that type of person in it. So many thanks. _________________ 1951 Split Standard Hoffman Build

Now you got me blushing
Seriously though. I'm glad I could help. The truck turned out great! |

Nice.
The turn knob goes on the driver's side though?
Example
Also:
The "flat" side of the cross-shaft goes against the other side.
You have the 2 mounting screws screwed into the flat parts of the cross-shaft but they screw into the round side with the flat against the flat of the brackets, otherwise it will "strip" and rotate when you apply some force.
I did the same thing the first time I did one too.
If you want, glue a door seal in there too for better sealing, there was one in there originally:

I've done four of these over the years, this photo of the drilled out rivets really brings the memories back. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

Like I said earlier the way VW made them to work but this time I put it in the right way! Thanks Everett
This also goes back to why these cars can bring us some grief at times because somebody in its life thought, "what the hell this way will work" and the guy restoring it 60 years later can feel like a jack ass.
Plus as much as I like the patina I'm not a fan of it inside areas causing improper use of things so I will most likely come back in here again and sand the rust off and maybe shoot it to match or por15 it so the fresh air box can work its best.

Yes it was the quickest part and crazy to think how many parts VW made with rivets. _________________ 1951 Split Standard Hoffman Build
