I was wondering if since 356 cam gears have the same p/n as the vw 36hp gear (111 109 111) as long as the gear teeth pitch between the porsche part and the vw part match up would the cam gears be interchangeable? |

Yes, they'll work.

Thanks! Is that stack of 36hp gears by chance yours and if so does it happen to have a -2, -1 or 0 gear you'd be willing to part with? |

Yes, they're mine. I'm going to use a case that didn't come with a cam gear, so I'll end up using the one that fits best, and selling the rest.
I'm not interested in selling them right now. This shop has a wide selection of cam gears for sale: https://bugcity.com/shop/shop.lasso?cid=1&scid...ort=name_a

For the life of me, I can't figure why VW increased the helix angle in the first place. It isn't like the early version was noisy, and an increased helix needlessly increases thrust. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

You’re right! They used the early ones that “gears” and I were referring to. And they stuck with them for the entire 356/912 production ending in late 1969. Unlike VW. Try and keep up _________________ Jack Staggs

I obtained a nice -2 356 gear from ebay, so good to go hopefully. It appears identical in all aspects to my worn -2 gear except it has both bolt holes and rivet holes. I'm now on the hunt for some 1/2" 8 x 1.25 bolts to complete the install to my WW performance .345" lift cam.
I see that CIP is branching out now, with an aluminum hub fiber gear ("noiseless") 25/36hp gear, and also an aluminum gear that looks to have been supplied by BBT in Belgium. |

When a fiber gear fails, it fails spectacularly.

Ok then... EWWWWWwwww not good! I'll back away from the fiber dealio then.
I'm going to double check my Bentley manual but IIRC I think I even saw where VW replaced the fiber gear in later years because it wasn't durable.
thanks for the heads up! |

Excuse my question, but what is -2,-1,0,+1 or +2 Gear Pitches and what it do? _________________ http://www.facebook.com/groups/vwbug/ |

My understanding is that the different gears (e.g. -3, 0, +3, etc.) are intended to make up for slight manufacturing variations of the cam/crank centerlines. I've read someplace that most cases should be in the -1 - +1 range.
