Hi everyone, this is my first post on the samba. I’m pretty mechanically inclined and I’ve been working on a few friends vans. The one I’m currently working on is a 86 syncro and I am trying to replace the cvs.
Here’s the rub: the Rear axle I pulled out has only 24 splines. I know that stock vanagon axles have 33 splines and that aftermarket Porsche axles have (27?)
I want to order new cvs in order to finish the job but I don’t know what axles the van has and neither does the owner. If anyone can point me in the right direction as to what axles I’m working with and who has the compatible cvs. I absolutely love the community here!

33 spline for vw or porsche 944 or 28 spline axles for porsche 930 are all that i am familiar with that will bolt up.
Try posting some pictures to get better input, you might have something custom. |

It could be an aftermarket complete cv shaft. Lots of subpar stuff out there. _________________ ☮️ |

Welcome! Time to quit screwing around with friends' vans and get one of your own, but good on you for helping them. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

^^^^^^^^
Better to find an original shaft and use New Lobro joints. |

Thanks for all the responses! I didn’t know if I had posted my inquiry correctly haha!
It’s possible that I counted wrong (I’m not sure if you count the “valleys” or the “peaks” on the axle)
I messaged t3technique and I was impressed by his response time. He suggested that I have Porsche 944 axles and that I miscounted. He also said that 944s came with either 33 or 25 splines. I ordered a cv from him based on that info but I received one with 33 splines. I haven’t found any websites that distinguish between two splines. I’m frustrated because I still have this guys van :/.
And I’d love to get my hands on a tin top but I’m short on finances at the moment! One day
Also I want to make sure it’s clear I appreciate t3technique and that I’m not bashing on him by any means!!

Just go to Oreilley's and buy one of their complete replacement axle setups and get back on the road cheaply for now. Then search up a known original Vanagon axle and rebuild it. |
