I found some time to work on the truck. The engine needed to come out for a minimum of push rod tube seals and a new generator. I figured I should give it all a good cleaning and a quick detail (is there such a thing???) while it is out. Also planning on throwing a new stock muffler on, cleaning and patching up the heater boxes, and a new battery tray too.
This is the first vw I have worked on with the cooling flaps and thermostat all in place. All these extra parts are new to me!
I have driven 3,369 miles since I first got the truck.
Engine out
For some reason a D-bolt was used on the driver side top? It was so painful to reach this and took me way longer than it should of because of 1 stupid bolt.
Looks like the customized the tin to get the oil cooler tin to fit...
I'm embarrassed to show that this motor mount completely separated once the pressure was off. Yikes.
Lots of rubber dust? Maybe the pulleys are out of alignment? Im thinking of replacing the pulleys with a new set...
Making a mess

That D bolt Oh man, how is that even possible to tighten that up there?
Nice finding a complete un-molested engine, I got lucky on my DC, overall it was pretty complete.
Have fun with the engine! _________________ 1978 Bay Window Double Cab (1600cc) - Marilyn

My forward most piece of engine tin was hacked up, I checked my stash for the elusive "71 only" tin... no luck so I decided to combine it with a beetle tin as others have done. This should work right? I'm not well versed in beetle parts so if something looks off please let me know.
Ouch
Separated the 2 pieces by drilling the spot welds all the way through.
Clamped up and ready for welding.

I decide to fix a piece of the sled tin in the mean time.
The mounting tab the connects to the block has seen better days.
I hang on to left over patch panel chunks for jobs like this...
My tig welding needs a bit of work, but I think it will hold. 😅
One more piece of the seemingly endless tin puzzle... _________________ 1971 Chianti Red Westfalia x2

It will work just fine. That is pretty much exactly what VW did to make the 71 tin. _________________ nothing |

Finally had some time to upload a few pictures.
My heater boxes needed some repair.
I wanted my truck back on the road in a reasonable amount of time, so I wasn't trying to make these a show piece or anything... I ended up filling in the worn out areas where the donut seals. Ill probably replace them with a flange eventually.
VHT silver looks pretty good
Most of my tin was powdercoated black.
Its came together nicely. I pulled the heads and replaced the push rod tube seals, but I didn't take any pictures of that greasy project. _________________ 1971 Chianti Red Westfalia x2

Muffler is on.
I temporarily patched the battery tray last year. It was time to do it right.
I should have taken some pictures after seam sealer and paint but I was to excited to put it back together.
Engine is back in. New fresh air hoses and stuff.
Bumper on.
Out enjoying it as much as posible!
