I had no idea that Karmann Ghias ever had a sunroof until I ran across this photo. Not only is it a lowlight, but it has a sunroof Shocked

That's SO COOL! I recall seeing a Type 34 with a sunroof, too, but I've never seen any other examples. Did KG make cars with sunroofs or were these custom jobs? I'm much more of a sunroof guy than a convertible guy. If they were actually made from the factory, I'd love to find one Drool

I don't believe any KG ever left the factory with a Sun roof or a Rag top. But If I had a coupe I would prefer an open top as well.
But nothing compares to a ride in a cabriolet with the top down. Very Happy

I've had a sunroof 911 (1980), a 1996 Porsche 993 Cabrio 4, and a 1996 Porsche 993 Targa. The Targa was by far the best open air experience.

I've also had a ride in and around Edinburgh in Phil's KG cabriolet (vert) and it was cold. Much like the ride in the Porsche Cabrio 4: buffeted by the wind and a schlep to take the roof down and secure it under the tonneau cover.

Oh, and a 1994 Alfa Spider - best of the lot, in every department.

Back on topic: I would love to have a sunroof for my Ghia. Tell me how and where.

Here some infos too:
http://www.karmannghias.org/Golde1.htm
I would love one too as I enjoy so much every ride in my 62 ragtop but still did not manage to convince myself to cut the only part without rust on my ghia Laughing

Yes that's John Figgs' Golde Steel Sunroof '58. They didn't come from the factory but were an aftermarket addition.

Two high quality options back in the day, the Golde steel and the Webasto fabric roof but both very rare.

Here's a few of topics about them:

I was trying to get a friend to sell me his black Golde Sunroof '56 Ghia but he wasn't ready so I bought a black '58. He now says he's ready to sell...15 years later. Smile

If it's a period fitting then it's extremely rare, only about 10 or so known to have survived. Cloth and leathercloth was the standard upholstery.

Were they coded at all like beetles? The body is pretty solid and savable so you would hate to cut the roof off.

Were the Golde metal ones factory installed and the fabric ones done by body shops?

Not factory installed, they were never an official option, an aftermarket accessory. Pretty sure they were the same as the 356 model, they certainly have the same roof panel profile.
