So here is the scenario.
It had a Hot rod muffler that got swapped out for a oem style one.
Gas tank was near empty when taken to shop.
Fill up tank on 1st ride after about a week after repair.
Went up a very steep hill after a short ride.
I stopped at my sisters house for maybe 10 minutes.
When i went to restart it it acted as if it was flooded.
When i opened the front there was some gas by the large hose connected to gas tank as well as along side the tank where it meets the inner edge of the Thing.
Fuel filter was clear and full in the engine area
Gas cap gasket maybe old?
That large sleeve by the gas tank is damp with gas as you can kind of see in pictures 5 & 6
I just ordered the gas smell kit from Thingparts as well as the small fume elimination kit.
All new fuel lines on order as well as a new fuel tank screen and a new sending unit.
This all needs to get done anyway i suppose.
. Eventually it restarted but i had the pedal down to the floor.
I'm wondering if the fact i ran it down and then filled it way up clogged stuff up? Or because it was about 85 and hot and humid i got vapor lock?

Well, I see a loose screw on the EMPI carb at the choke, is the disconnected
EGR valve blocked off on the manifold somewhere? If your running an 009
distributor where does that vacuum line off the manifold go?
My 74 is different with a block off plate where the EGR used to go and I have
a DVDA distributor.

I had to replace those large fill hoses most of 10 years back as they could no longer contain the fuel.
Sounds like you could have a piece of dirt in your needle valve. Try just putting the peddle down on a long hill so the needle valve is fully open and a small piece of crud just might clear the valve. |

Obus,
My thing ran a similar setup as yours for many years and I was always told to go back to DVDA and a German carb. I put it off for a long time but finally scraped together enough coin to have the original carb and distributor rebuilt by nice folks from here on thesamba. I've had it going for a year or two now, and while there is some difference, it is not super amazing. I still have a hot soak/vapor lock issue sometimes.
