I’ve been trying to downsize my collection so I can focus my attention a little.... with varying success. Anyway. I started poking around my 49. There’s been a pretty serious head on accident at some point but it’s actually not bad.
Various patches welded on but original heater channels and floors. Although they’ve been plated over.
Here’s a short of the interior for posterity’s sake.

… '49, doesn't look bad - i'd use it as is - all pretty and new-looking old VWs don't thrill me much - really prefer ones like pictured - to me, old cars should look old and worn (like we old people look) ... running is a treat - i'll be leaving ALL my VW junk to our son as he wants it all - I've been buying parts for fun and helping him as old VW parts are more available now.
SO, what are you gunna' do with this '49?

Well this one I'd like to do properly. I'm hoping to retire in a couple of years, so its the perfect project. Until then it's a case of finding what's missing or needs replacing. I really think the best thing to do is get it running and driving whatever state it is. Then start amassing the parts for the big build later on. Smile

And I need to do some homework on the first Deluxe modes. lt seems a bit of a quirky crossover.

So from what I can make out, a July 49 has the same chassis and body of the earlier cars, with the addition of:-

Bright body trim. (any running board trim?)
White dash pods, knobs and buttons.
Glove box surounds. (are the boxes lined?)
White steering wheel (batwing or 3 spoke)
Internal bonnet relese and chrome bonnet handle.
No raised number plate moulding on engine lid.
Chrome bumpers and rounded over riders.
Rectangular mirror and sun visor.
Chrome door handles in and out.

It retains;-
Small fuel tank.
Off centre ZAR lever.
Simple headling.
Heater control knob by handbrake
Mechanical brakes.
bolt down seats
Plain rubber window seals.

My door glass is notched for ventelation, is that right?
Im not sure on tail lights either, these seem to be 51-52 my last 49 was November and had the thin aluminium bezel around the lense. should July be the same or the earlier type?

Anything I'm missing here guys?

this brochure pic is helpful with its off center reserve tap

… great lookin' car, from the picture - especially like the light patina on the rear bumper and on the left rear fender - guess you'll be making those nicely worn areas all pretty and un naturally new looking - I know, that's what everyone does - is so nice when folks just allow the natural-imperfections-of-time, the 71 years, enhance the natural beauty - making it mechanically sound is all the work, that gem could use, to be perfect -
-

… look forward to your progress...

Oh boy I wish!
Looks original but the black and the white beneath it were masked interior an exterior blow overs. Before that it was orange, with shaggy pony skin seats 😱

… many thanks for that mental image - so, what ever you do, can only be an improvement, after creating that image...
… I still like the way it looks, right now.

I was watching this blog and wanted to know if you have any split beetle projects for sale? I am back in the market scouting again. I was hoping to find something close to driver, but open to things? Let me know. I live on East Coast USA in Pa. Tim DiGuardi

Here's my 52ish pod before and after a clean up. Note that August 49 Deluxe size bezel was factory brown, no chrome under it....? I was thinking I'd have to change the pod and speedo but maybe I'll keep it and just paint or replace the knobs. That brown 100mm bezel seems to make it a bit of an oddity.

Yes,. that pod looks fabulous
- your pictures are worta' thousand words - Garwood says that beginning on the 6/49 deluxe models, all knobs were ivory, as yours are - Think you should have brown knobs too? What about a 3 spoke steering wheel?
is your car an 11A?
My old '6/52, deluxe had the same instrument pod, which I liked immensely.

i'd say that's a 1950 feature, but very worth having - Garwood says, that commenced at ch, no. 156991, 4/50

Cheers. Yes the pod is 52 so wrong and the speedo 08.49 so also wrong. But I can’t get my head round the original brown painted Deluxe bezel. Doesn’t fit in with the chronology. But it’s there plain as day, a 100mm Deluxe bezel in brown. Why is that? Yes I’ll go for brown knobs too.

i'm not well-versed enough to answer your query 'bout the brown 100mm bezel... your '49 is destined for greatness is all I know - z

… notched glass is definitely a 4/50 item (according to my main man, Mr. Garwood), but a very worthwhile upgrade . I know, if I had a pre 4/50 with no notch in the glass, i'd go for it anyway - you know, what they say > "DIFFERENT STROKES, for different folks"... z
